I have placed this post in this section because school costs are a provincial gov't responsibility.

So to-day is the first day of school for this year and some youngsters are running to school and others have to be dragged. It appears that year after year, the cost of sending a child to school to the parent is increasing;

It has been many years since I have had to spend anything for my children and have not enquired as to the costs for my grandchildren.

This week we attended a social function where this topic came up and I was surprised by the current costs and how it varied depending on school and school system, PTA and involvement of local community clubs. It also seemed to vary depending on whether it was a school in a Separate Board or Public.

Since we have anonymous members from across Canada, I wonder what is the cost of sending a child to school in your area. And, does any school in your area subsidize those costs depending on the family income?

The public school my kids attend ask for a more extensive list of supplies than most in the area. The list isn't mandatory but they do use the additional supplies to provide school essentials for lower income families, so I don't mind the cost.

I think it is about $100 for school fees at my spouses school. Of course, there are also school supplies as usual. Kids are also asked to cough up a few bucks for outings to help pay for the bus and entrance fees.

It is a working class neighbourhood public school with many immigrants and some that have little to no cash. Nobody gets turned away, the school manages its own money and they kick in small amounts for all these things. There is also a strong Parent Council that does fundraisers and they are very good at making sure nobody gets left behind for anything unless they want to be left behind(ie Jehovahs witnesses at Halloween or Muslims at Xmas). My wife is also good at scrounging and hoarding free stuff and making sure everybody in her class has what they need. If all else fails, she buys stuff herself for certain kids, especially if they are hungry.
