caesar Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 Muslim students in Montreal denied prayer roomsLast Updated Fri, 15 Oct 2004 17:57:45 EDT MONTREAL - As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Muslim students will have to pray in cramped stairwells at two Montreal engineering schools because the institutions won't rent space to let them practise their faith. This article is on the CBC web site. Why should a engineering school be compelled to provide a prayer room for religious purposes. These students knew it was a secular school when they enrolled. More and more we are losing our Christian rights (now politically incorrect to say Merry Christmas-- we are asked or encouraged to say happy holidays) Keep religion out of our workplaces and schools. If you cannot accept thsi; go where it is provided. I worked with a girl whose religion did not believe in Christmas; she was offended when asked if she wanted to chip in for a Christmas present for our bosses; but she was more upset when she did not recieve a Christmas bonus ( This was done not in retaliation but not to offend her since she did act so offended when asked to contribute) In other words; they don't mind the perks of paid Christian holidays a well known tradition in this country. As much as I would like to celebrate every religions holidays with a paid holiday by my employer; if we did; how often would we work. Quote
kimmy Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 Most university campuses allow clubs or student groups (Young Liberals on Campus, Engineers Without Boarders, Gays and Lesbians On Campus, whatever...) to use university areas to hold their meetings. If a campus is willing to allow the Dungeons And Dragons Nerd Society to use campus space to hold their meetings, why shouldn't a Muslim or Christian group be able to also meet on campus space? If they close the door before they start praying, surely they won't be infringing on other students' sensibilities. -kimmy Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
maplesyrup Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 As it does more harm than good, all organized religion should be banned from any kind of special privileges, including tax breaks. Why should someone who does not believe that "JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD" be forced to subsidize that mythology through those tax advantages or perks?
