You'd be surprised to know that many companies are only running on one data center. I've seen Loblaw go down for a day because the datacenter was taken offline hard due to bad weather. I think they have remedied that situation.

Not only that, it takes time for remote back up systems to kick in. Sometimes several hours.

The Internet was originally designed by the US military to survive a nuclear attack. It can handle a few hackers. The critical network infrastructure is physically protected and geographically isolated.

You, sir, have trouble with your mind. It is locked onto a trajectory which has arisen from previous experience. Your concept of what hacking can do is based upon our history with a few adolescent vandals. You really don't understand because you have never really put your mind to examine the possibility of a state with nearly unlimited resources attacking dozens if not hundreds or thousands of sites simultaneously, perhaps including special software developed and inserted ahead of time. China's Huawei is now the world's largest builder of telecommunications infrastructure, which of course, means everything they're tied into is wide open to the Chinese government. Chinese companies are building computers and selling software, and every one of them is ultimately controlled by the Chinese government. Add in a few hundred spies directed to cut cables and blow up computers and our entire system could be brought crumbling to the ground.

Not at the banks, or at least not at the two banks where I have seen their redundancy planning up close.

It would take several hours to staff up at a secondary location, but the data should be flowing in minutes if not seconds.

I don't think Loblaws or Walmart would be crippled if HQ networks collapsed, the stores can run on their own. But banks......

That's just it, with everything moving centralized, all the stores across the country could not process debit or credit. It was ALL down.

Kaspersky says the attackers became entrenched in its networks some time last year. For what purpose? To siphon intelligence about nation-state attacks the company is investigating—a case of the watchers watching the watchers who are watching them. They also wanted to learn how Kaspersky’s detection software works so they could devise ways to avoid getting caught. Too late, however: Kaspersky found them recently while testing a new product designed to uncover exactly the kind of attack the intruders had launched.

We know who did Stuxnet , so we know who did this one.

The FBI is operating a “small air force” of planes equipped with video and cellphone surveillance technology (known as stingrays), according to a report released Tuesday by The Associated Press.

The wire service says it traced at least 50 aircraft to the bureau and more than 100 flights since late April. The flights took place across at least 11 states, in both rural and urban areas, including Houston, Phoenix, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis and Southern California, the AP reports.

Though the planes are usually disguised as belonging to fake companies, including FVX Research, KQM Aviation and NBR Aviation, the FBI says the program is not being hidden. "The FBI's aviation program is not secret," spokesman Christopher Allen told the AP.
