spicygarage Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 A simple question which I'm finding surprisingly tough to Google. What is the approximate portion of Ontario provincial taxes paid by Toronto taxpayers as a whole? (Not GTA, just Toronto's 2.6M citizens.) I can't just use the population ratio, since one would assume the average Torontonian has a different tax profile than the average Ontarian as a whole. In the "teach a man how to fish" vein, a sourced answer would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Quote
guyser Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 From what I understood when looking a long time ago, $16B was forwarded and TO paid $12B of that. Its why we bitch about things here in TO and tell smaller towns folks.....'Youre welcome' Quote
Boges Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Are you talking about income taxes and sales taxes raised within Toronto alone? It would be hard to calculate because some people work in Toronto and live outside and others work outside and live in Toronto. And what of sales taxes? Does Toronto get to claim the revenue received when outsiders come into Toronto and spend money? (for sporting events, theatre, tourism etc) Quote
guyser Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 I think the Q is total Ont taxes vs the amount that TO contributes. Quote
Boges Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 I think the Q is total Ont taxes vs the amount that TO contributes. But Toronto doesn't "contribute". The people in live Toronto contribute, and the people who work in Toronto contribute, and those who visit Toronto contribute. Toronto can't just claim that revenue as from them and say they deserve a comparable share of infrastructure spending in return. They're the largest city in the country and the centre of an even larger CMA, of course they're going to generate a lot of revenue. Quote
guyser Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 By whatever measure you want, TO citizens dont get nearly as much back as they pay. No one is saying they should get it all, but when shortfalls come, we'd like to be able to access it . The tax base outside of larger communities cannot afford some of the things they get....and where did they gt that money then? You're welcome ! Quote
