TimG Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 There is much research on socialized behaviours. Do we need to cite research studies? Seriously?Extremists on both sides like to put everything on nature or nurture depending on their prejudices. The latest science seems to suggest it is both - even down at the DNA level where there is evidence that environment can lead to the activation or suppress of particular genes. I think it reasonable to state that personality traits and interests of boys are different from girls at a biological level, however, environment can lead to these differences expressing themselves in positive or negative way. The healthiest environment is one that acknowledges the biological differences and seeks to direct them in constructive ways. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted March 24, 2014 Author Report Posted March 24, 2014 How do you know what is socialized? Don't we often enough hear about people growing up in male bodies who were never comfortable, never felt like a male, never liked the things males like, always preferred female things, and vice versa? We DON'T know how much is socialized, you're right. But we know it happens. Why make children feel abnormal for liking books that are labelled 'FOR' the other gender ? Why make children feel abnormal for liking books that are labelled 'FOR' the other gender ? No reason to. Why condemn them for liking books FOR their own gender? Argus Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 (edited) In other words, that allows for the freedom of choice - which is what this initiative supports. No, it actually doesn't. What this initiative supports is eliminating books which are designed to appeal to one gender or another. Thus no more cowboy books for boys unless there's girl stuff in it. What the inevitable result of success in this would be is to mirror school systems which have,in their teaching practices adn rules, according to so many, ignored boys in favour of girls. http://www.cblpi.org/resources/article.cfm?ID=52 Edited March 24, 2014 by Argus Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley

No, it doesn't say anything like that in the OP article. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
