Scotty Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 IAnd what is more important, on the day after, Harper will not have the support of key regions in a federal Canada. If I were Stephen Harper, that would disturb me in a way that has nothing to do with raw electoral calculations. Seems to me the last Liberal government also lacked support of key regions in a federal Canada. That didn't seem to bother them much. Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy
August1991 Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Seems to me the last Liberal government also lacked support of key regions in a federal Canada. That didn't seem to bother them much.Last? Chretien/Martin had some seats in the West. I think it was Trudeau in 1980 (and more certainly Turner's Liberal opposition in 1984) that had few Western seats. But Scotty, the great divide in Canada is linguistic, and Harper is looking to about 7-8% among French-speaking Canadians in 2015. This should matter to Harper because many immigrants (or reasonably-minded English-speaking Canadians) vote for a federal leader who has (some) support in Canada's two linguistic communities. In any case, the federal Liberal support in Alberta in 1984 was about 12%. If Harper can get 12% in Quebec in 2015, he will be re-elected with a majority government. Unfortunately, I don't think Harper can get 12% in Quebec in 2015. Edited July 9, 2013 by August1991 Quote
normanchateau Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Everybody on the left wants him to retire. lol Harper does not have to leave , he has done a great job. Every goverment has it's trouble makers and harper is not one of them .He is not arrogant like chretien , nor angry like tom or a flake like trudeau. He has acted very civil, just because the media party says something about him does not make it true, they know they can fool gullible people and they have. It is time to reboot and come back even stronger. The funny thing about it , if he was that bad you and the others would want him to stay. LOL I want Stephen Harper to stay. There's no one I'd rather see than Stephen Harper leading the Conservatives into the next election. Quote
Newfoundlander Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 If polls keep going the way they are Harper will be re-elected in 2015. Quote
normanchateau Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 If polls keep going the way they are Harper will be re-elected in 2015. And if polls go in another direction, he won't. Yet another reason why I hope the Conservatives keep Stephen Harper on as leader. Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Not sure what poills you are looking at. Everyone I see says if there where an election today, Harper would be kicking horse terds down the road. Justin would have a majority. Quote

Everyone I see says if there where an election today, Harper would be kicking horse terds down the road. Justin would have a majority. Don't know what polls they are. Recent polls have the three parties much closer with the Liberals in the mid to low 30's. If an election were held today the Conservatives could still win more seats than the Liberals, even if not the popular vote. The Conservative Party base is 30%, much higher than any other party, so they just need to win over some of the other 70% of voters. The Liberals poll numbers are similar to what they were during the beginning of Ignatieff's time as leader, not a great sign. Edited July 11, 2013 by Newfoundlander Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Nanos, Ipsos Reid, maybe you've heard of them. Nick Nanos was on CBC radio just last week with the latest. Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 What I found interesting (and reassuring) in the Nanos interview was he said they added a question to their poll which asked instead of the normal "who would you vote for?" but "who would you not consider voting for?" Harper won that one: 62% said they would not vote Conservative but hadn't made up their mind on their alternative. Quote

Papacorn Posted July 27, 2013 Report Posted July 27, 2013 I hope I never see another majority government in my lifetime. It seems to me that majority and corruption go hand in hand. And,no, I don't believe for a minute that the NDP would be any different. Quote
