DogOnPorch Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 The 20th century version of Bruegel the Elder. Discuss?? Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

Hopper has numerous iconic paintings that are more famous than his name. Nighthawks in particular...everybody has seen it...but, don't know where it's from. Like Bruegel the Elder, I feel Hopper is capable of painting those slices of life that make up the particular time in which he painted. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
scribblet Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 He did paint slices of American life at that time, and I do like Nighthawks. It conveys lonliness and emptiness. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
DogOnPorch Posted October 30, 2012 Author Report Posted October 30, 2012 He did paint slices of American life at that time, and I do like Nighthawks. It conveys lonliness and emptiness. Not just loneliness and emptiness...it is also has been said it represents predators (thus the name) who, rather than doing what they do, sit like birds on wires into the wee hours. The War was on (1942). Why are these men not in uniform? The woman is in red and wears no wedding ring. Is she working? Did she just come from a dance with the fellow she sits with? Is she just killing time? He looks more dressed for business...or the Mafia. Is it Sunday morning? Or Saturday? The streets are empty...yet dawn's light hits across the street. Yes...great painting. There's a different version of it which is also quite familiar by Gottfried Helnwein... Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

DogOnPorch Posted October 30, 2012 Author Report Posted October 30, 2012 I suppose the guy behind the counter is emptying the ashtray? We don't know...it's a bit like the last scene in The Sopranos. It's a very compelling painting begging all sorts of questions. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

Guest Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 I have to admit I was one of those who was familiar with the painting without knowing who painted it. It'll be my desktop for a while. Quote
DogOnPorch Posted October 30, 2012 Author Report Posted October 30, 2012 (edited) I have to admit I was one of those who was familiar with the painting without knowing who painted it. It'll be my desktop for a while. One of my favorites is 'Gas'...from about the same time, 1940...but just before America entered the War. It's a similar situation as 'Nighthawks'...lonely...but, this time, it's man vs nature. It's a literal border (the road) between civilization and the unknown. The forest looms like something out of Lord of the Rings...dark below even though it appears to be a sunny evening/morning...judging by the building's/gas pump's shadows.
