So the Wildrose choke artist leader Danielle Smith is in trouble for retweeting a statement about possibly donating the "tainted" a message asking why the meat at XL has to be thrown in a landfill when it can be cooked to a proper temperature and donated to the poor.

Wildrose Party Leader Danielle Smith's response to a Red Deer man's tweet questioning whether tainted XL Foods meat could be saved to feed the poor instead of being sent to a landfill has put the Alberta politician on the defensive.

Smith said she made a mistake and has learned a lesson about social media.

Hundreds of tonnes of the recalled beef were dumped in a Brooks, Alta., landfill over the weekend. The meat is from the beef processing plant, which is at the centre of an E. coli scare that involved more than 1,800 products.

On Sunday, Ray Yechtel's tweet asked Smith, “Is there no way to cook it [the meat] so it’s safe and feed the hungry?”

Smith responded, saying, "I agree. We all know thorough cooking kills E. coli. What a waste."

Beef is rather expensive, why not give it to people how often go without. There are safeguards that can be made to ensure the meat is safe. Sure you wouldn't want have a medium rare ribeye from this meat but isn't canned meat pasteurized? Can't similar steps be made with this meat, instead of throwing it all away?

Why is proposing this somehow an attack on the poor?

The main reason I suspect is that XL does not own the beef.

They probably issued a recall under the terms of their insurance policy thus they would not own it, the insurance company would. And they are in no position to do anything with it but to destroy every bit of it.

If not, and XL kept and redistributed the food, they would be in a lose lose scenario, not only do they lose the sale proceeds, and pay the cost of collecting the beef, they also open themselves to a massive product liability suit.....one in which they would most certainly lose along with defence costs that would soar through the roof.

I get that. It's a liability issue as to why they have to destroy all the beef.

But it's One Million Pounds of beef! Ethically is that the right move? And is it right that Danielle Smith is getting flack for saying the food should be donated.

They own it, they make the call.

To them its 1M lbs of lawsuit hell. The sooner they are done with the better they will feel.

Danielle Smith should have put her head in gear before her mouth started flapping
