And what about someone having a heart attack out on the water. This is quite literally going to be life and death for some people.

The same thing that happens now……..They’re brought to a pier in False Creek or Granville Island and taken to St. Pauls or VGH via Ambulance…………If you’re concerned about response time, perhaps you should petition Mayor Robertson to remove the poorly planned “bike lanes” over the Burrard st Bridge and the Viaducts into the downtown core…..

And nothing you posted proves your point, other then you don‘t know what you‘re talking about.……….The Vancouver wharfs don’t see a fraction of the ship, rail and road traffic as the facilities on the Fraser and Roberts Bank……….

The Lifeguards have boats………funny concept.

For someone claiming to live on an Island, you certainly don’t know what the definition of Inlet is..

Lifeguards??? You really can't be serious.....

I do know a thing or two about inlets. I also know enough not to think that the Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound are "inland waterways"!!

Brought by whom to a pier?

So, what is the purpose of the 150-200 Lifeguards the City of Vancouver hires every year? Also, what's the purpose of the VPD maritime unit and their two boats? Contrasted with the ~15 Coast Guard members currently at Kitts Beach?

Who said anything about the Georgia Strait or Howe Sound? If that’s your concern now, since you mentioned it, Sea Island is closer to both bodies of water then Kitts Beach……….Not to mention, the two Coast Guard units in West Van and Deep Cove…..

What is the purpose of the VPD maritime unit? What if they decide to strictly stick to law enforcement? They are the police after all, not the coast guard or lifeguards. What if they decide to get rid of their boats all together? You are suggesting the feds dump their responsibilities on the VPD and Vancouver taxpayers.

SAR is a police function.

SAR is a police function.

Not really. There is no requirement for them to provide SAR coverage in Vancouver harbour. They could get rid of their maritime unit tomorrow.

Lifeguards are not proffessional mariners. What a silly suggestion. Your defense of the indefensible s getting ridiculous.

Sea island is not closer to Howe Sound. Check a chart (or map as you city folk call them).

Sure, the function of a Coast Guard Rescue Boat could be taken over by the city, be they increasing the VPD Maritime unit or paying to have a Coast Guard Auxiliary unit stood up……..Both the units on the North shore (West Vancouver and Deep Cove/North Vancouver) function in such a manner and have no problem providing 24/7 coverage in the Burrard Inlet……..The Deep Cove unit was funded by the Northshore yacht club………Surely the City of Vancouver could afford several Zodiacs and half dozen personal if required……..But I question said need, what with two Coast Guard rescue boats based across the harbour, two police boats in coal harbour and 150-200 fulltime and part-time lifeguards on the cities beaches………..Will the City really miss 15 fulltime SAR members and a tiny rescue boat? Doubt it.

As to the VPD itself, could one expand onto that? I mean “what if” the VPD decided that they would no longer respond to car accidents? Or the Fire Department to overdoses and cardiac arrests of the Downtown Eastside?

What’s the reasonability of the 150-200 lifeguards the city hires for the city beaches?

Perhaps you “need to check a chart” and locate the aforementioned West Vancouver Coast Guard unit and it’s location contrasted to Kitts Beach………

I suppose that was a pass on your reference to the Georgia Strait though right?

Lifeguards are not going to do SAR! What kind of crazy fantasy are you living?

West van is 1 auxiliary unit.

I'm not convinced that you've ever been on the Strait! Lol

So? Are you suggesting they are not available 24/7?

Sure I have……..I don’t think you know how to read a chart……..How many km from Sea Island to Horseshoe Bay and how many km from Kitts to Horseshoe Bay?

Now if said conventional rescues boat is leaving Kitts Beach, in route to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal at it’s maximum speed of ~25 kts and at the same time, said Hovercraft leaves Sea Island for Horseshoe Bay at it’s maximum speed of ~45 kts, who will get their first……….Remember also, a Gas Turbine can achieve it’s max Horsepower much faster then a Marine Diesel, and a Hovercraft isn’t effected to the same degree as a conventional design in choppy seas…..

To add, from the Coast Guard last month:

Coast Guard acknowledges only defense department consulted about B.C. station closures Read more: http://www.theprovince.com/news/Coast+Guard+acknowledges+only+defense+department+consulted+about+station/6681438/story.html#ixzz1yPMGxp2N

The Canadian Coast Guard says closing the Kitsilano search-and-rescue station will not put lives at risk because a good enough mix of resources is available to respond to maritime emergencies around Vancouver.

And this:

Thomas said there has been a “significant amount of misinformation” about the Kitsilano station. She said on average, it responds to about 200 calls per year, noting 70 per cent of them are not distress calls.

So big brother in Ottawa's decisions, even on regional issues are always right and should never be questioned or challenged. How Orwellian. How disappointing. I wouldn't have thought that of you.

Methinks this may have something to do with the change in attitude.

money can be a powerful motivator.

I have noticed a real difference in the poster's critical thinking as well. Used to be one of the Conservative posters whose opinion I actually respected, but not lately.

The Conservative MP from that area has expanded upon his reservations about the changes.

Lunney pointed to a strong quake in 2004 that shook Seattle and closed down U.S. monitoring stations, with Canadian centres temporarily picking up the service. If a similar quake affected Canadian centres, especially Sidney, it would result in one centre being responsible for the entire coast.

Pretty odd for a Conservative MP to come out against decisions made by the Harper Government. Of course, this idiot had no problem voting FOR the changes, now he's paying lip-service to his constituents since parliament is done sitting for the summer and he'll have to face them.
