Helena is suing Harper and some other Tories and WE, the taxpayer we have to pay for, which could reach a million or more dollars. Why can't the Tory party pay for this, since its their party she is suing and NOT the Government of Canada. I'm pretty sure when Mulroney was PM, the PC paid a lot more of the expenses of the PM, than THIS Conservative party does. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/taxpayers-foot-bill-harper-high-powered-legal-defence-191523371.html

Ok, here's the deal.

It appears she's not suing the Conservative Party. She's suing the Conservative government for defamation. There's an important distinction to be made there. The government is funded by taxpayers' dollars, so they will defend themselves accordingly.

However, the problem is that the taxpayers already foot the bill for staff lawyers at the Department of Justice. The government could utilize one of them. Instead, they're hiring a private lawyer to defend them.

So while on one hand they're laying off employees, they've just hired another lawyer at the DoJ rate specifically to defend them.

So essentially it still stinks that taxpayers are footing the bill for extra help--in other words, the Conservatives' arrogance is costing us taxpayers extra.

Harper et al will seek to have the court action dismissed. In explaining the case further, PMO spokesman Andrew MacDougall said it's quite likely taxpayers won't be paying any costs whatsoever.

Of course, it remains to be seen if the case goes forward or not.

What I'd like to know is what the lawyers at the DoJ think about being passed over.

Government Waste Taxpayers monies and this one is no different. There are paid salaried Lawyers to do this work. The government has already blown monies just opening the file with the private firm...

A Salaried Lawyer can get this tossed out just as easily as a costly external firm.

Yeah it sounds pretty honky to me.
