stopstaaron Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 (edited) I totally agree with this! If the person is suffering a terrible terminal illness they should have the option to end it pain free. If you decide to comment on this please leave your religious views of ending ones life out of this thread. This has nothing to do with religion. This has everything to do with compassion and the chance to end life with dignity in tact and painless. No one is forcing anyone to end their life. It's solely up to the person whom is dying. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/allow-doctor-assisted-suicide-in-exceptional-cases-quebec-report-urges/article2377993/ A landmark report in Quebec recommends that doctors be allowed to help terminally ill patients die, in exceptional circumstances, if they want to. The report was released Thursday in the Quebec legislature, after two years of work from the so-called Dying With Dignity Committee, a multi-partisan group of nine MNAs. The committee recommends a legal option for medical assistance for dying, in cases where Quebecers are terminally ill and want to die. In those cases, a patient must be an adult, suffering from an incurable disease and demonstrating an inability to endure the physical or psychological pain. The request for help in dying must come directly from the patient, with two doctors certifying the request. Quebec's public hearings into dying with dignity spanned months, hearing from individuals and experts both here and abroad. The commission heard from 400 witnesses and read through 300 submissions. A delegation went to France, the Netherlands and Belgium to see how the debate over dying with dignity is playing out in Europe. “This mission was enlightening for our deliberations,” Gaudreault told a news conference. The recommendations aren't binding, but to ensure the report doesn't end up on a shelf the committee is recommending a law be adopted by June 2013. I would even be brave enough to add that if anyone who has never had a family member/friend or someone close to them slowly die should not be commenting either! This happened to me twice. The first time was about my cat Bob. He was a brown short haired tabby and he had a heart of gold!Around 2008 he started to get bad gum disease and it was very hard to improve with antibiotics wich puzzled a couple of differnt vets.He even had to a have a couple of teeth extracted. We tried everything but nothing worked. After some months I took him to a specialist whom tested him for FIV and feline lukemia.(routine for this specialist vet)He tested positive for FIV and had full blown AIDS.For cats there is no cure no treatment and I was devestated!Eventually his condition became so bad I could no longer bear to see such a proud animal suffer. He did not eat or drink for four days when the vet finally put him to sleep forever. He had lost half his body weight, his fur became very thin and he droulled blood/saliva constantly that dried on his fur and around his front paws.(I tried to keep him clean).Having the vet put Bob to sleep was the most painful decission I ever made in my life. But it was more painful for Bob to live! Eight months after Bob died my father died aswell on Aug.26th 2011.He died from intestinal cancer and was 85. Two years ago my father had a stroke that left him in a wheelchair. He still had strong will so this was only a setback.Soon after Bob died he had his second stroke and things got real bad.He became bed ridden and started to loose weight. The pain was not a factor due to drugs/medication.Last summer he was diagnosed with the cancer and the doctors said that it was fatal and he would have only a short time(they were right). The short time between my fathers second stroke and the cancer seen my father deteriate horribly. It was a terrible thing for the family to witness and my father wanted to die.Cancer did the favour but some people are not as blessed to have a natural passage. This is a family and personal decission and there should be a final option available. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! stopstaaron Posted March 22, 2012 Author Report Posted March 22, 2012 WWWTT.. so sorry that your Bob & your dad went through all of that & you and your family Most of us have lost a loved one from cancer.. and we should have that choice Quote Don't ban me bro. WLDB Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Ultimately I think it should come down to choice. If the dying person wants it it should be available. If they want to stay alive and die naturally that should be allowed as well. I'm definitely for it and would like it available should I ever wind up in that position. Its strange that its considered inhumane to keep a suffering animal alive yet a person in the same type of situation doesn't get that option. jbg Posted March 25, 2012 Report Posted March 25, 2012 WWWTT.. so sorry that your Bob & your dad went through all of that & you and your family Most of us have lost a loved one from cancer.. and we should have that choice My father died from cancer during January 1973 and my mother now has recurrent uterine cancer. I second you and WWWTT. I believe in treatments, as long as they generate quality life. Someone should have the option of committing suicide in a humane, medically assisted manner just before or during major suffering.
