Researchers have found a possible explanation for why certain people are prejudiced: they’re less intelligent.

Children with lower general intelligence are more likely to become prejudiced as adults, according to a Brock University study.

The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, examined data from two large-scale British studies, and found lower intelligence scores in childhood were predictors of greater racism in adulthood, which the researchers controversially explain is brought about by adopting right-wing ideologies.

it's not just the british studies that came to this conclusion:

A secondary analysis of data from a U.S. study also showed those with poor abstract-reasoning skills were more likely to have anti-homosexual prejudice, partially linked to authoritarian attitudes.

Lead researcher Gordon Hodson told LiveScience that the results of the study indicate a vicious cycle, in which people with low intelligence are drawn to socially conservative ideologies. In turn, those ideologies can contribute to prejudices.

the research also confirms another obvious:

The researchers found that people with lower intelligence also tended to have less contact with other races and groups, which, Dr. Hodson said, supports previous research that determined interacting with other groups is mentally challenging and cognitively draining.

Everyone is prejudiced in some way - the human brain is hardwired to make generalizations from limited datasets. The only difference is the people that are the target for prejudice. Many lefties are unapologetic bigots when it comes to whites, Christians, Jews or any other group which they decide is "privileged".

did you get your information from research and do you have anything to back it up with or are you just voicing a personal opinion?

Ahhhh no. If you read the OP youd know that ISNT the only difference.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

The lefties, which include nearly 100% of the politically correct, are the most intolerant destroyers of free speech you can possibly find. They only see their own points of view and work feverishly to smother any views that do not gibe with theirs. These so-called "human rights" tribunals (i.e. lynch mobs) are ample evidence.

The study appears to exclude the large selection of the bigots in society. Any conclusions drawn from a subset of the population are quite meaningless. This is basic statistics. Edited by TimG

No it doesnt. Bigoted lefties have the same exact same problems with logic.

Besides being simplistic hogwash this is also jsut flat out wrong.

Everyone has their own ideas on whats "politically correct" and what isnt.

are you calling b'nai brith a lefty group that uses and abuses the human rights commission and tries to silence free speech?

B’nai Brith intervened in two recent human rights decisions that demonstrated the ability of human rights law to offer an effective remedy to hate speech on the Internet and in the press.

In January 2002 the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal released its long awaited decision in regard to Ernst Zundel. In that case, complaints were made with regard to Zundel’s use of the Internet to spread hatred. His website, called the Zundelsite, had gained notoriety as a purveyor of antisemitic Holocaust denial materials.

A second important human rights tribunal decision, issued in November 2001, concerns the complaint of Harry Abrams against Doug Collins and the Vancouver area North Shore News. Mr. Abrams is the British Columbia representative of B’nai Brith Canada’s League for Human Rights. Originally the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal had ordered, at the request of Mr. Collins and the North Shore News, that the fault (i.e., whether the columns breach the B.C. Human Rights Code) and Constitutional issues be separated. In February, l999 the Tribunal upheld Mr. Abrams’ complaints against four columns written by Doug Collins and published by the North Shore News. It ordered that a summary of its decision be published and that a fine be paid.

For the sake of debate, could everyone explain their view on what is a "lefty"???? Is it a left Conservative, a left NDP, a left Liberal, left Green...what? Did you know that left-handed people have a higher IQ??

There are several types of intelligence, and it sounds as if the studies linked in the OP only refer to one. I truly doubt that "prejudice" and "less intelligent" go hand in hand any more than "tolerant" and "higher intelligence" do - and I would wager that life experiences are a big influence/factor.

life experiences include:

The researchers found that people with lower intelligence also tended to have less contact with other races and groups, which, Dr. Hodson said, supports previous research that determined interacting with other groups is mentally challenging and cognitively draining.

at the same time, dr. hodson adds:

Dr. Hodson explained the findings do not mean all liberals are smart and all conservatives are stupid, LiveScience.com reports. “There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals,” he said.

however, despite that, overall, the different researches have shown that the so-called right wingers are less intelligent which results in being less tolerant, and more prone to racism.

I also doubt this study. I am sure that they are explaining a coincidence more than a causation... as most studies take this with a grain of salt. As partisan as I can be, I doubt that conservatives are less intelligent than liberals simply because of their politics... just as many loony leftists as crazy rightists...

And as American Woman said, life experiences are a HUGE influencing factor. It's harder to be very open to other races when you live in Little Bay, NFLD. and you have seen two non-white people in your life (hyperbole but still, you know my point).
