Shwa Posted November 5, 2011 Report Posted November 5, 2011 Now we'll all get to wear beaver wear everywhere, courtesy of Parks Canada: Parks Canada to launch beaver-centric merchandise line Beavers could be leaping from rivers to the runway with the launch of a Parks Canada clothing and merchandise line. The government agency is seeking companies to design an array of T-shirts, ball caps and water bottles, inspired by the great Canadian outdoors, with a caveat: all items must feature the toothy national symbol. The merchandise — which will be sold online and in downtown Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, as well at Parks Canada stores — will be an opportunity for people in urban centres to reach out to their “cultural and national heritage,” said Greg Danchuk, the Parks Canada acting director of brand experience. What I like though is how truly versatile the beaver is: “Our look is vibrant, exciting, energetic and vital,” says a guide to the Parks Canada look. “When it needs to be, it can be reserved and sombre. Simply put, it’s flexible.” I've seen excited and flexible beavers before, heck I've seen stuffed beavers, but I can't say I have ever seen a sombre one. And, no doubt, next October they will come out with a line of pink beavers. Congrats Parks Canada! If there is one thing Canada needs now, its more beaver. Quote

cybercoma Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Why don't they just team up with Roots who uses the Beaver for their logo anyway? Quote
Shwa Posted November 7, 2011 Author Report Posted November 7, 2011 Why don't they just team up with Roots who uses the Beaver for their logo anyway? How would that work? Parks Canada pays a large slice to Roots for producing the goods? Nah, if they contract the production out themselves, they can brand it anyway they want and likely charge less for Roots quality gear without any fees going to Roots. Quote
cybercoma Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 It all depends on what the arrangement would be with Roots. I just find it funny that Parks Canada is creating Beaver gear when the Beaver is also Roots Canada's clothing emblem. Quote

I just find it funny that Parks Canada is creating Beaver gear when the Beaver is also Roots Canada's clothing emblem. The Beaver is also Canada's emblem. They have no need to deal with Roots at all. I really can't see why they would. It is not like the Ministry of Citizenship has any deal with Maple Leaf meats to produce little mini-flags for new citizens. Do you remember the 'Roots Athletics'logo that ran for years in the 80's & 90's? I had a sweatshirt that mocked it with 'Rats Pathetic' and a stylized rat in the background. Quote
guyser Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 I really can't see why they would. Instant credibility, instant cache , known quality assured. Lots of reasons, however the deal would be expensive and will they sell more shirts and make more in the long run? Perhaps. Quote

Shwa Posted November 7, 2011 Author Report Posted November 7, 2011 Are these t-shirts and hoodies going to be made in China? yes, through a CIDA foreign aid program. Quote
guyser Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Parks Canada isn't credible? As a retailer along the lines of Roots? No. I say nothing bad about PC but the ability and infrastructure of Roots, along with their savvy business sense and numerous stores puts Roots above PC. Quote

And Roots did sponsor Sports Canada for some clothing items for the Winter Olympics. And they make nice watches. I'm converted. Quote
cybercoma Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 I was specifically arguing for Roots, but it does make the most sense. Little known fact: Roots makes the vests that Indigo employees wear. Quote
