An invasion of Canada certainly was an intention of the war. The seeds of Manifest Destiny were very much alive in 1812.

I can't dispute that since my knowledge of the politics of the time is limited.

The term Hawks and Doves originates with the two factions in Congress who were for and against war with Britain. High handed British stupidity resulted in the Hawks getting the upper hand and war was the result. Invasion of Canada was a primary Hawk objective. Interestingly, President Madison was one of those who were against the war. In recent times it seems to be presidents who get the country into wars and Congress who objects.
