g_bambino Posted October 3, 2011 Author Report Posted October 3, 2011 (edited) And you - Bambino - naively believe that The Sovereign will always be wise, beyond reproach, unimpeachable, incorruptible. I never said any such thing; stop being disingenuous. What I said was that the honours that are administered without political influence are the ones generally uncorrupted. Look again, please, at the Order of the Garter: a gift of the sovereign for centuries, only after politicians gradually gain more involvement in forming its membership does it take on airs of patronage. The solution, as spelled out in the last sentence of what you quoted? Remove the political involvement and return it to what it originally was. One reason that I am a democrat and I favour a republic... is that we would establish now a civilized way to get rid of an idiot leader in the future. We already have what you say we need; you offer only an ill-conceived solution to a problem that doesn't exist. You would replace the sovereign with another politician beholden to party ideology and indebted to the party leadership that selected and/or endorsed him for their own benefit. You would, ironically, be opening the door even wider for the corruption you moan about to enter into the highest office of the nation and, thus, the honours issued from it. ToadBrother Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 One reason that I am a democrat and I favour a republic - a Federal Republic for Canada - is that we would establish now a civilized way to get rid of an idiot leader in the future. And what, you can't vote out a government now? I'm confused here. I thought we had these elections where we basically said who the lawmakers are. Quote
