Guest Peeves Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) We shop there for items that are less expensive. We can compare prices. We can buy gas at lower prices. There are more choices. I still get pissed that most comparable products here are more expensive even now that our $ is valued higher. Oh I know, we have higher taxes to pay for our 'better' health care, but that doesn't cut it for me when the price difference some times is 30 to 50 %. Why wold anyone pay it if they don't need to? Guest American Woman Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Don't you have to declare it, though, and pay taxes at customs? For larger items. I know you're allowed a certain $ amount. I suppose if you cross daily and just spend the allotted amount, you can purchase a lot of stuff by going that route. As for the more expensive prices in Canada re: health care - I thought the higher taxes were the only thing that went towards health care, so that doesn't explain the higher prices ...... seems to me someone is profiting off of the higher prices, and I don't see it as being the Canadian citizens themselves. Smallc Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Oh I know, we have higher taxes to pay for our 'better' health care, What does that have to do with prices? Businesses are actually taxed at a lower rate in Canada. The difference is that our market isn't as competitive, and also that there are quantity and logistical issues that don't work in our favour. Smallc Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 anything not made in the US which includes most clothing is subject to duty charges... That doesn't just happen in Canada though. That happens to most imported goods. Canada is actually one of the largest free trade countries that there is. I was just joking about the Canada Customs thing, btw. Quote
jbg Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 canada border services agency, canada customs to us boomers...The new name sounds more service-oriented. It's as if they're here to help. Those duties are charged because we don't have free trade agreements with the manufacturing country, but Canada has a large number of free trade agreements in comparison to most countries, so that isn't the reason for the overall higher prices. After all, the US charges duty too. Canada is simply a different market. Tough prices should come down, prices will probably always be higher than the US, just as they'll probably always be lower than Europe and Australia. Edited August 31, 2011 by Smallc Quote

That's normal, again, for any country. They haven't paid Canadian duty, and they come from a location that isn't exempt from Canadian duties. Quote
