maplesyrup
Ad firm asked employees to donate to Liberals MONTREAL - Some former advertising employees of a Quebec advertising firm associated with the scandal-plagued federal sponsorship program say their boss asked them to make donations to a Liberal candidate in the 1997 federal election. Employees of Lafleur Communications – a firm that went on to handle many of the contracts in the sponsorship program – say the personal contributions they made to the candidate in the Montreal riding of Saint-Lambert were really donations from the company's owner, Jean Lafleur. Federal election law prohibits making a donation with money that comes from someone else. The list of contributors to the 1997 campaign in Saint-Lambert shows a number of large personal and business donations that bankrolled Liberal candidate Yolande Thibeault. It includes ad companies that would later become embroiled in the sponsorship scandal. Group Action and Group Polygon each gave $5,000. Now some of the people who made personal contributions say it wasn't their idea. Several people who worked for Lafleur Communications say Lafleur asked them to write the cheques and later paid them back. The Liberals continue to implode. Someone is going to have to hold the Conservatives' feet to the fire when Harper takes over as PM. I think Jack Layton better get ready to play a larger role, as the Liberals seem to be heading South in the polls.
