William Ashley Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 (edited) Harper Government treatment of Atomic Energy Canda leads to need for Russian Isotopes brought in. What I'm wondering here is - with all this northern sovreignty talk, why is Stephen Harper ordering medical isotopes from the Russians? You need what you need but why shut down and sell Atomic Energy Canada, if the result is buying these "essential" medical material from the Russians? http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20101223/molybdenum-99-isotope-shippd-101223/ Odd. What are the cost savings? the Job savings, the infrastructure savings. Not sure the cost, but I'm geussing a few jobs have been reduced in number, and some important canadian infrastructure has been reduced in number. How much did it save the Federal government in overall cost to Canadians? Edited December 24, 2010 by William Ashley Quote I was here.
Bonam Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Harper Government treatment of Atomic Engergy Canda leads to need for Russian Isotopes brought in. Not sure the cost, but I'm geussing a few jobs have been reduced in number, and some important canadian infrastructure has been reduced in number. How much did it save the Federal government in overall cost to Canadians? It's because the mere mention of the word "nuclear" scares Canadians and the government can't seriously build any new nuclear facilities, especially experimental reactors which produce isotopes, without spending about $1321041284 trillion on environmental and safety assessment. Same problem in the US. In Russia, whatever the government says is gonna get built, gets built. Hence, they can have all kinds of crazy reactors going and producing all kinds of isotopes, at a fraction of the cost. The only way to change this situation is to redeem the reputation of nuclear technology in Western countries, this is a very long and slow process that at best could happen over several generations, but most likely won't. If anything, people are becoming more and more anti-nuclear in the West, not less. Quote

Well Harper must be one of those antis because Ontario was suppose to get money for a new reactor in 2006 and Harper cancelled the money. Quote
William Ashley Posted December 24, 2010 Author Report Posted December 24, 2010 I still don't get how the fact that Ontario was planning on expanding its nuclear power capacity anyway - it would work right in to include a research reactor in with it and take out two problems in one shot.
