Topaz Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 IF`and when this can happens, do you realize how dangerous this ability can be? One only has to beam to a nations`s leader, and kill them and leave and never to be found. About IF this does come to be, they could beam a whole army to another country. I don`t see anything good to come out of this only harmful things. Perhaps the Chinese want to say Beam me up Scotty! Quote
TimG Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 IF`and when this can happens, do you realize how dangerous this ability can be?Don't worry. The Chinese are only trying to replicate an experiment that was done years ago elsewhere. It has nothing to do with the star trek concept.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_teleportation Quote

Bonam Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 This isn't anything new, I remember hearing about the single particle quantum teleportation experiment in a documentary on the discovery channel when I was like 14. It's been around for a while, but hasn't progressed any further. While I'm usually the first to harp on the endless possibilities of accelerating technological progress, practical macroscopic teleportation is not something I'd expect to see any time soon, mostly due to the staggering energy requirements of direct matter synthesis. Anyway, teleportation on a larger scale is actually a very interesting philosophical and metaphysical issue, particularly as it applies to living beings. For example, if a teleporter scans you, saves the information about the exact configuration of all the particles in your body, vaporizes you, transmits the information to another teleporter unit, which then recreates a perfect copy, is it still "you"? Equally possible, the teleporter could skip the "vaporize you" stage, and simply create an exact copy, while the original remained. Which one would truly be you? How could anyone tell the difference? All this of course supposes that a person is fully specified by the classical states and positions of all the atoms comprising their body. It obviously ignores any spiritual notions that anyone may hold. More importantly, it also discounts the quantum states of the particles comprising one's body. The No-cloning theorem of quantum mechanics states that it is impossible to make a perfect quantum copy of something, meaning that the quantum state information about the subject could not be preserved and re-created. Thus, if the quantum states of the particles of one's body are integral to one's identity (as unlikely as this might be), then perfect teleportation would in some sense be ruled out by the fundamental laws of physics. bjre Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Not surprise they did a good job in many areas. They have the best education system: While comparison with national averages for other countries is misplaced, Shanghai topped the OECD league tables, not only for the best readers but also for maths and science, two other areas tracked in the OECD's so-called PISA report on education. -- from OECD warns West of losing global edge in education http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101207/ts_nm/us_education_world Even Obama knows that: two years ago China produced five percent of the world's solar panels. Today they produce 60 percent. We're not even in the game. ... When global firms were asked a few years back where they planned on building new research and development facilities, nearly 80 percent said either China or India -- because those countries are focused on math and science, and they're focused on training and educating their workforce. ... You go to Shanghai, China, and they've built more high-speed rail in the last year than we've built in the last 30 years. The largest private solar research and development facility in the world was recently opened in China -- by an American company. Today China also has the fastest trains and the fastest supercomputer in the world. ... Think about that. There's no reason why China should have nearly 10,000 miles of high-speed rail by 2020, and America has 400. Think about that number. They've got 10,000; we've got 400. They've got trains that operate at speeds of over 200 mph -- and I don't know how fast our trains are going. http://www.worldnewsmania.com/2010/12/07/politics/chris-weigant-obamas-new-theme-a-sputnik-moment/ Only many Canadians love to hide their head in sand. TimG Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) Shanghai topped the OECD league tables, not only for the best readers but also for maths and scienceLet's try comparing apples to apples. i.e. how does Shanghai compare to the wealthiest cities in Canada? They did not report that data but provincially BC and Alberta did significantly better than the Canadian average. It is quite likely that they did better than Shanghai-China. If you average Macao/Hong Kong and Shanghai results then China did about the same as Canada.Shanghai two years ago China produced five percent of the world's solar panels. Today they produce 60 percent. We're not even in the game.Chinese makers took an older panel design added cheap labour and non-existent environmental standards and dumped low cost panels on the market. There is no rocket science. It is predatory pricing.Shanghai There's no reason why China should have nearly 10,000 miles of high-speed rail by 2020, and America has 400.Sure there is: high speed rail is an expensive white elephant unless there is an extremely high population density. If you average Macao/Hong Kong and Shanghai results then China did about the same as Canada. Data from Canadian large cities are better are because there are more Asian people there. If you search top rank EQAO schools, in most of those schools, Chinese immigrants are the majority, that is no longer an secret. For China, Shanghai is far from the best, Small cities in many province has much more better students, if you go to top universities in China, you will find most graduated students and PhD candidates are not from large cities like Beijing or Shanghai. That is because 1, large cities has better life and more things to play and small cities student will use more time in focus on their learning, 2, large cities received more western poisonous ideas so that kids themselves can decide more things themselves when they actually have no (or have wrong ) idea of how to manage their own time and decide their own behaviors. Chinese makers took an older panel design added cheap labour and non-existent environmental standards and dumped low cost panels on the market. There is no rocket science. It is predatory pricing. There is rocket science in China that send people into space and send satellite in to moon orbit. Sure there is: high speed rail is an expensive white elephant unless there is an extremely high population density. The US does not need high speed rail. It has cars and planes. Actually now China is world's largest car market and airplane market. Does not change the fact that comparing a single Chinese city to the Canadian national average is misleading to point of dishonesty. For China, Shanghai is far from the best, Small cities in many province has much more better students, if you go to top universities in China, you will find most graduated students and PhD candidates are not from large cities like Beijing or Shanghai. Then why didn't they include the small cities in the test? China has huge disparties in wealth and that will have an effect on the national results. There is rocket science in China that send people into space and send satellite in to moon orbit.By copying technology that was developed elsewhere decades ago. Sending a rocket into space is something commerical companies now offer for 10 million/launch. Edited December 9, 2010 by TimG Quote
