Melanie_ Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Fine. Then don't conform. But don't expect the "majority" culture to readily employ the 'non-conformers' at other than menial jobs. And also don't expect subsidies or handouts. Jumping in... What you seem to be saying is that someone's style of dress determines whether or not they are capable of doing a particular job. Really? What ever happened to judging someone on their abilities? Attitudes like yours are why affirmative action was implemented in the first place. Attitudes like yours are why affirmative action was implemented in the first place. What I'm saying is that in white collar fields especially, there is a chance that an employer will judge an employee by what kind of impression they may make on co-workers, other employees, etc. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." jbg Posted December 21, 2011 Author Report Posted December 21, 2011 Update: The link in the Opening Post died, so here's a replacement story, from the same incident. Saudi Arabia is making good progress which we can all be happy about. In another example of Saudi progress, they have developed the concept of exact equal proportionality of deliberately paralyzing a violent attacker (link): Saudi Arabian judge asks hospitals to paralyse man Associated Press in Cairo guardian.co.uk, Thursday 19 August 2010 13.23 EDT Article history A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals whether they would punitively damage a man's spinal cord after he was convicted of attacking another man with a cleaver and paralysing him, local newspapers reported today. Saudi Arabia enforces strict sharia law and occasionally metes out punishments based on the ancient code of an eye for an eye. Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, 22, was left paralysed after a fight more than two years ago, and asked a judge to impose an equivalent punishment on his attacker under sharia law, reports said. The newspaper Okaz said the judge in northwestern Tabuk province, identified as Saoud bin Suleiman al-Youssef, asked at least two hospitals for a medical opinion on whether surgeons could render the attacker's spinal cord nonfunctional. **************** Those who are sentenced to death are often not informed of the progress of legal proceedings against them, or of the date of execution until the morning on which they are taken out and beheaded. The headless body can then be crucified in a public place as a way to set an example, according to the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islam. While the country is not perfect, it is a guiding light to the world. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." All killing is not murder. The commandment is "thou shalt not murder" and not "thou shalt not kill". Armed forces, police and the government, correctly, kill under certain circumstances. And the purpose of my post was to express admiration for the Arabs, not to condemn them.
