dapatriot Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) OK! All the final standings for the 2010 Winter Olympics that news media resort to are the final medal count. That's fine as it goes. Canada came in third when the final medal tally came in. USA: 37 medals (nine gold). Germany: 30 medals (10 gold) Canada: 26 medals (14 gold). Canada, of course, had the most gold medals. BUT!...if you convert the medals to POINTS; 3 points for a gold medal; 2 points for a silver, one for a bronze, then...Canada came in SECOND: USA: 70 points. Canada: 68 points. Germany: 62 points. Incidently, Canada won more gold medals at these winter olympics than in any previous olympics, winter or summer. Our summer olympics gold medal record stands at 10, obtained during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. And, considering our nation is about 30 million people, Germany about 100 million people, and the USA about 300 million people, that puts our medal count in a different and amazing perspective, doesn't it? Smallc Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Until of course you consider what Norway got. We did great, but so did some other countries. Quote
Smallc Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Oh, just a correction also, Germany has 80M people, and the US about 310M. We have nearly 34M. Quote

Not a very good excuse given that the US is a free country and allows people to move between states to pursue life, liberty and happiness. We have nearly 34M. and Norway 3 million...Norway wins...I recall in past Olympics rankings were done first by the amount of Gold medals and some countries still recognize that method so in those places Canada is rated first... when tabulating great Stanley Cup or World Cup Champions do we count up 2nd place finishes, do we even care? no, no one even remembers who came 2nd or 3rd...only 1st matters... Sir Bandelot Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 if you convert the medals to POINTS; 3 points for a gold medal; 2 points for a silver, one for a bronze, then...Canada came in SECOND: USA: 70 points. Incidently, Canada won more gold medals at these winter olympics than in any previous olympics, winter or summer. Just to clarify this point, not only a record for Canadian gold medal wins, but more gold medals than any country has ever won, in the winter olympics. Quote
