Topaz Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 PM has given the provinces the word that they will probably have to tighten the money belt cause by the high Fed. deficit. This is nothing new to Canadians, and I have a feeling the Fed. public workers are going to feel the cuts, since the Tories say they won't raise taxes but no matter what they say, an increase in EI premiums is a raise in taxes. I can't see how the Tories will get rid of the deficit with the wars high cost and now Harper talking about rebuilding Haiti. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/ottawa-warns-provinces-will-be-cutting-back-too/article1439826/ Quote

Most of the deficit was attributed to the large ecnomic stimulus package that was put together, which also ends soon. The structural part of the deficit is fairly small, but yes, it's a good idea that provinces as well as the feds start to tighten their belts. But I'm confident we won't see the draconian cuts to provinces that the Liberals passed along during the late 90's. Quote

I'm confident we won't either, because with the polling numbers, no one is going to want an election. The Tories won't do any drastic cuts lest they simultaneously trash their already faltering numbers while the liberals take advantage of the situation. Quote
