madmax Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Opps Stelmach steps in it Banter in the Leglislature leads to apology... Stelmach hit one dead centre in the legislature Tuesday when ND Leader Brian Mason attacked the lack of plans for vaccinating the homeless. After questioning Urban Affair Minister Yvonne Fritz, who bobbed and weaved as best she could, Mason asked Stelmach: "Why have you ignored them? Why haven't you provided vaccine for them, Mr. Premier?" Astonishingly, the premier retorted. "Mr. Speaker, you know what? I'm going to take the word of this nurse over any bus driver any doggone time." Mason used to be a bus driver; Fritz worked as a registered nurse for 20 years. It's hard to imagine any facts less relevant to the debate. But Stelmach dragged them out with a bizarre crack that sounded dismissive toward working people. He surely didn't mean it; nobody who knows him personally would believe that. But once again, the premier's deaf ear to political undertones turned an innocuous moment into trouble. Mason took quick and brutal advantage. "We could all refer to each other by our previous occupations," he said. "I could do that to the premier, but it's beneath me. It should be beneath him as well. . . Your arrogance is beyond belief." Quote
fellowtraveller Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Good for Mason, it is truly a rare occurence when he gets the Premiers attention, much less gets his name in the newspaper. I was starting to think he had retired. Quote The government should do something.

fellowtraveller Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 when was that annouced? last I heard there would be no change except a few more in the rural areas... early last week, they also announced a clinic for flu-only sickies in Edmonton. All of this has been made moot by the announcement that all clinics will now revert to immunizing high-risk groups only until more vaccine was available. Quote The government should do something.
GostHacked Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 There have been shortages all over the country. So it's pretty usless bitching. ... sorry... banter. Quote
wyly Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 There have been shortages all over the country. So it's pretty usless bitching. ... sorry... banter. well now we have shortages of the vaccine, before we had shortages of vaccination clinics alberta (Manitoba got it right)...now I hear alberta government plans to change the system, kids under 5, prego's and those with medical conditions go first, healthy people those least at risk can WAIT!...which is the way it should have been from day one... GostHacked Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 well now we have shortages of the vaccine, before we had shortages of vaccination clinics alberta (Manitoba got it right)...now I hear alberta government plans to change the system, kids under 5, prego's and those with medical conditions go first, healthy people those least at risk can WAIT!...which is the way it should have been from day one... Most people with common sense and not swept up by the hype would have stayed home and let the people who need it most get access to it. Not only that, those in those risk groups could have easily be exposed to this h1n1 by a person who can be considered a carrier. The vaccine will not give you 100% immunity from the virus, however it will shorten the time you are sick with the flu. Quote
fellowtraveller Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 (edited) before we had shortages of vaccination clinics alberta ??? How so? The existing clinics blew through their entire allotment of around 400,000 people vaccinated in about a week. That is not too shabby, and probably represents around 1/4 of those who will ultinately be vaccinated. I'll bet the staff are very happy to have it slow down a bit. Toady they announced kids 6 months to 5 years now, then pregnant women, then high riskers. That should take care of the 200,000 or so doses remaining, then more vaccine is supposed to arrive. At least those who were possessed by fear now are out of the way, shouldn't be much in the way of line jumping. Edited November 4, 2009 by fellowtraveller Quote The government should do something.

So the reason the clinics have stopped vaccinating is because they have limited vaccine available, becuase they were organizede enough to get that many needles in that many arms in that little time?? Would you prefer there were fewer? I don't understand your anger. 400,000 vaccinations is a significant number, congrats to the clinic workers for their hard work. Winnipeg population 600,000? 12 vaccination clinics, Calgary population 1,000,000 4 sites... fellowtraveller Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 so you are Stelmach's mom...you're the lone voice in Alberta thinking this was done right... Winnipeg population 600,000? 12 vaccination clinics, Calgary population 1,000,000 4 sites... Did Manitoba do 400,00 vaccinations last week? It doesn't really matter if high risks get done this week or last or next. MOst provinces including Alberta plan on getting the shot to everybody who wants one by Xmas. Assuming they get the vaccine, that is easily achievable. What has a bee up your ass is that you'll use any excuse to whine about the ideology you hate, the actual situation does not matter. Today on CBC they went across Canada speaking to people about their experience with the vaccinations. Result: everybody is unhappy with long lines. Where they had high riskers first, they were all bitching that people were jumping the queue, 7 hour waits then getting turned away....... Same in Alberta, except we had no queue jumpers- yet. Manitoba vaccinated over 200,000 but with a Population of about 1 million they did much better than alberta population 3.5 million, alberta would needed to have vaccinated about 700,000 to do as well.. It doesn't really matter if high risks get done this week or last or next.it certianly does if you get sick and you're in a high risk group it can literally be a life and death situation... my daughter was vaccinated too late, she was already infected and became sick the next day but she is not in a high risk group... Aparently you have reading comprehension problems, the H1N1 numbers aren't a yearly average, it is the death toll so far, and it is far below what the seasonal flu virus causes in one year in just one country.
