Argus Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 (edited) In a new book, a former CSIS agent asserts that foreign spies run rampant in Canada, stealing between $20-$30 billion worth of information every year, intimidating and even assassinating local ethnic members who criticize foreign governments. The Chinese, the book says, are particularly aggressive, are everywhere, and Canada has long lacked the political will to stand up to them. The Spies Who Love Us None of this is particularly new. It's been an open secret for decades that the Canadian government doesn't like to embarrass our "foreign partners" and that whenever spies are discovered the government, be it Liberal or Conservative, tries to keep things quiet, hush them out of town and play down the importance. Many of the allegations in the book, though, seem far too important to be glossed over, and I think this is one area which could use a thorough public examination. kimmy Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 That is truly astonishing. Thanks for the information. I might find this book for myself. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Canada has long maintained that China will become more democatic and open by engagng with us. Sure they will. What's really happened is that our government has become more like their's. More unaccountable, secretive, opaque... As for CSIS...as I recall it actually helped advise Chinese internet security officials on how to build its Great Firewall. Argus Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Canada has long maintained that China will become more democatic and open by engagng with us. Sure they will. What's really happened is that our government has become more like their's. More unaccountable, secretive, opaque... I think being in a minority gives governments a feeling of being under siege, and makes them feel they can't afford anything getting out which could damage their popularity - and thus lead to the opposition "overthrowing them" as it were. As for CSIS...as I recall it actually helped advise Chinese internet security officials on how to build its Great Firewall. No Canadian government of any political stripe seems to have ever given a damn about foreign espionage in Canada.
