A Sudanese journalist has chosen to spend a month in jail, rather than be forced to pay a fine for wearing trousers in public.

Lubna Hussein was convicted on a charge of public indecency Monday, about two months after she was arrested at a Khartoum café during a police raid. Twelve other women were arrested along with her.

Ten of the women were later fined and flogged, but the 43-year-old Hussein and two others fought their arrests in court.

On Monday, the judge ruled that Hussein's July outfit was indecent and he imposed a US$200 fine.

Under public indecency laws implemented by the Sudanese government, anyone doing or wearing something that is deemed indecent can be punished with a flogging or a fine.

Actually, that's reasonably enlightened for the Muslim world. At least she wasn't caned or whipped or whatever. It's better than videos of 16 year old rape victims being hanged for "admitting to having sex" with their rapists.
