Sudanese journalist fined $200 for wearing pants (link, all text excerpts below) Updated Mon. Sep. 7 2009 6:24 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff A Sudanese journalist has chosen to spend a month in jail, rather than be forced to pay a fine for wearing trousers in public. Lubna Hussein was convicted on a charge of public indecency Monday, about two months after she was arrested at a Khartoum café during a police raid. Twelve other women were arrested along with her. Ten of the women were later fined and flogged, but the 43-year-old Hussein and two others fought their arrests in court. On Monday, the judge ruled that Hussein's July outfit was indecent and he imposed a US$200 fine. Under public indecency laws implemented by the Sudanese government, anyone doing or wearing something that is deemed indecent can be punished with a flogging or a fine. ************ Edited September 8, 2009 by jbg Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." It's better than videos of 16 year old rape victims being hanged for "admitting to having sex" with their rapists.
