Pliny Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Am I off-base or haven't we learned from our improper use of antibiotics that we have to constantly find new antibiotics because the bacteria they kill develops immunity becoming in some instances a "superbug". I don't use antibacterial cleaners or soaps in my house because of this. I went to the hospital to visit a friend and they had these antibacterial handwashes all over the place, they are in restaurants, and most public washrooms. Apparently you are supposed to use them and prevent the spread of disease. I guess it will show some improvement until bacteria become resistant. Frankly, I am getting a little concerned about the appearance of resistant bacterial strains making their appearance in places where these are used. Should I be? eyeball Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 (edited) What's up with anti-bacterial soaps, scrubs, cleaners? We live in a society that is increasingly preoccupied with fear. I'm more concerned that fear seems to be evolving into ever stronger strains that are increasingly resistant to reason. So should "anti-bacterials" be a concern? Quote I want to be in the class that ensures the classless society remains classless.
eyeball Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 You mean a stronger strain like "terror"? Exactly. So should "anti-bacterials" be a concern? Probably. Presumably we'll evolve better resistance to these stronger strains, but the chance of having to face something really nasty might increase and outpace the pace of our ability to evolve. There was a good show on CBC recently called Allergy Planet that discusses the 500% increase seen in allergies and raised the hygiene hypothesis to help exlain why, and now its being suggested that the increasing incidence of diabetes also may be linked to living in a cleaner than clean world.
