Martin tells U.S. ambassador decision on missile defence pending

Just days after the federal election, Prime Minister Paul Martin informed American officials he would soon decide whether Canada will join the U.S.-led missile defence program.

Sources on both sides of the border indicate privately that Canadian participation is seen as a near-certainty, and a government website has already begun extolling the benefits of the missile shield.

But an aide to Martin insisted the prime minister was non-committal when he called U.S. Ambassador Paul Cellucci last week and suggested that - with a fall deadline looming - Canada was approaching its decision.

"He provided no assurance of any kind, whatsoever, with respect to timing - period," said Martin adviser Scott Reid.

"He did not provide assurance it would be soon."

The prime minister merely called to discuss a wide range of Canada-U.S. issues following the election, Reid said, and to return a congratulatory phone call days earlier from Cellucci following the Liberal victory.

No but it helps them look like they are thinking, atleast we would have had an answer with the conservatives. I personally hope the NDP can get the Liberals to say no to strategic missile defense, but we will have to wait and see on this one, of course a Liberal-conservative yes vote could put it through.

No but it helps them look like they are thinking, atleast we would have had an answer with the conservatives. I personally hope the NDP can get the Liberals to say no to strategic missile defense, but we will have to wait and see on this one, of course a Liberal-conservative yes vote could put it through.

A Lib-Consv vote would put it through, but since the Libs will be looking to the NDP for support a majority of the time in this government. The last thing Martin should do is piss them off by getting Harper’s help when/if a vote comes up on this issue

Haha I would rather spend our taxpayer dollars on a system designed to protect ourselves from Nuclear destruction than on the Gun Registry (which, surprise surprise, doesn't work when the offender *gasp* DOESN'T register his gun before a robbery) or paying for nice dinners and living quarters for in-mates ( because hey, they may have raped and/or murdered someone but they are people too =*( ) =p
