The Harper government came under fire on Monday over its spending for Canada Day celebrations, but it argued there was nothing unusual about its decision to give Quebec 85 per cent of the funds available for committees organizing festivities in 2008.

"The reality is that we have increased funding to support Canadian festivals across this country, including Canada Day, to celebrate Canada," Heritage Minister James Moore said in the House of Commons.

Quebec received $3.2 million dollars out of a total of $3.8 million in 2007-2008.

Although the feds say Quebec will receive less this year is not accurate as the budget has been inceased for 2008-2009 to $6.7 million and Quebec receives $3.7 million an INCREASE of $500,000 dollars.

It should also be pointed out this money is not only for Canada Day but in Quebec under budgets for 'Celebrate Canada' includes Quebec's Fete national holiday which is an extended multi day celebration.

Gerry Nicholls, a senior fellow from the Democracy Institute said:

the situation reminded him of the sponsorship program set up by the previous government that benefited Liberal-friendly advertising firms and ultimately erupted into a scandal.

"This is a waste of taxpayers dollars to pour money into Quebec for Canada Day," said Nicholls. "It's not going to make Quebecers any more loyal to the country. This is how the sponsorship scandal started."

And we should be surprized about this?

Surprised?

Yes and am extremely disappointed relating to the integrity of our leaders.

I am certain this is the type of example politicians would expect all Canadians to follow.

Don't ask why deep rooted moral decay exist in Canadian society and why no one really gives a damn about anything except self gain at any expense.

Suit yourself Smallc.

Maybe you can tell me what a federal government is doing funding Quebec's 'St. Jean Baptiste Day' celebrations which is a Quebec nationalistic celebration associated with Quebec separatist.

More Quebecers celebrate la St-Jean on June 24 than Canada Day on July 1.

Quebec still receives the lions share of funding and which makes it rather humiliating to loyal Canadians in other provinces who could see this as an insult.

It's also associated with Quebecers in general, but you can be as selective as you want in your arguments I suppose.

I am stating fact relating to the issue.

It is unfortunate that you seem unable to grasp the issue as reported by the Ottawa Citizen.

Oh, I understand the issue with the way the Conservative government is handling out money...but I really don't see how it's the fault of Quebec...or has anything to do with what they choose to celebrate.

On the other hand, I also understand that it's done to promote Canada in the province.

Fault of Quebec? Yes. To a degree. It's mostly the fault of unprincipaled politicians who have no moral qualms about trying to buy votes from anyone willing to sell them. And Quebec has been the biggest whore in confederation for the last hundred years.

Harper thinks he has to do a better job of buying Quebec votes but doesn't he realize it probably won't work? Quebec will also be the province who gets special treatment and so there so our tax money. BTW, the gov't pins, Moore said they they aren't made in China that they are bought in Montreal. Le Presse, found yes they do come from Monteal BUT an American company brings them in from CHINA!

Outright lies like the following one, especially relating to Quebec is why I despise federal Canadian politicians in general.

With great emphasis on "celebrated with honour". What a crock.

"The reality is that we have increased funding to support Canadian festivals across this country, including Canada Day, to celebrate Canada," Heritage Minister James Moore said in the House of Commons.

"We are using this money effectively to support festivals and events across this country that support the birthday of this country ... We are doing our job. We are making sure that Canada is celebrated and celebrated with honour."

When contending with the Liberals he probably feels there is no choice.

And doing so makes federal parties corrupt and dysfunctional.

Here is a quote from Harry S. Truman which I also posted elsewhere in another thread:

Harry S. Truman

"The fundamental basis of this nation's laws was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings we get from Exodus and Saint Matthew, from Isaiah and Saint Paul. I don't think we emphasize that enough these days. If we don't have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the State!"

Be cheaper to cut them loose - give them the land base they started at confederation with and their share of the debt - seems they have taken far more than they have ever given to Canada

Most of the country would be happy to see them go.

Seems the vote always takes place in the province about "should they stay"- maybe the rest of canada should vote on whether or not it is worth keeping them.

Give them their own currency, their own passport and make them have to apply for a visa to enter Canada.

Open up a lot of Ottawa jobs with french citizens having no right to work in Ottawa while living in a foreign country like Hull

Reduce the extreme costs of bi-lang training and labelling - remove mandatory bi-lang jobs, racist and one sided language policies, inequity in hiring franco over Canadian and the beat goes on.

Yup - likely best to cut them loose.
