The federal cabinet is considering a $150-million fund for the country's private broadcasters to help rescue local TV stations and their newscasts, The Canadian Press has learned.

Members of the cabinet priorities and planning committee met Tuesday to discuss their options for helping broadcasters who warn they are stretched to the max, sources said.

The private broadcasters are arguing that the CBC should not be eligible for money.

I don't think Harper will let private broadcasters shut down stations in Tory ridings.

CBC already gets government money. Lots of it.

CBC needs more money and it has to come from somewhere.

Hold a pledge drive like PBS. It is public TV so the public should have no problems supporting it out of their pockets.

They already do....through about $30 per person in tax money each year. The CBC needs more...and unless you can come up with a better funding model...

This isn't the US and the CBC doesn't fill the same roll as PBS. Begging for funding would not serve its purpose.

CBC gets plenty of welfare now. It is begging for more.

I can think of much better funding models....

1) subscription only, via cable or satellite. That would give them access to over 88% of the market.

2) Privatize it and commercialize it and let them compete on an even footing with the other private broadcasters.

3) Make it commerical free a la PBS with funding coming primarily from viewers like you...

Poor old Monty. Extolling the virtues of 'free market capitalism' and at the same time approving taxpayer bailouts for private corporations bottom lines. Profits remain private and only the losses are to be socialized, right Monty?

Totally ignores the purpose of the CBC

Completely ignores the purpose of the CBC

Sure, lets make it commercial free...but again, asking it to beg for money would undermine its purpose.

The CBC gets funding from the public purse because that's the way this country decided to fund its public broadcaster. The should be funded to the necessary level so that they can continue to do the job that they are mandated to do.

The CBC has had a very long history of ignoring the purpose of the CBC. Not withstanding that the CBC itself ignore the purpose of the CBC, nothing in those proposals ignores the purpose of the CBC.

...you don't by chance think the purpose of the CBC is to be a money pit?

They stopped trying to do that decades ago. Did you watch Jeopardy last night? Edge of the seat stuff....

It's forced to abandon parts of its mandate because it doesn't get enough money. Aside from the American programing however, the broadcaster has at least made a good attempt in its other areas. I'd like to see the government force the CBC to take the American programs off of its roster, but the government of the day doesn't seem overly concerned.

The private broadcasters gets lots of government money too. Lots of it.

They also get protection from competition.

Horsepuckey

Was it forced to drop french language hockey coverage?

Is it forced to air almost excusivly Toronto Games?

....the myopia of the CBC goes back as far as 1969 when the Toronto execs cancelled Don Messier despite being the #1 enetrtainment show in Canada.....it continues when the cancelled the Friendy Giant....

It's a giant conspiracy.

No it's not....but for those senior producers employed by the corpse it's a lunch ticket par excellence...no need for ratings, mediocrity is rewarded and the crap comes out on time.

Whining about cancelling Don Messer, and the Friendly Giant?!!!!

How about cheering that those programs ever existed in the first place? Without the CBC, they wouldn't have. Not those, nor any number of other great Canadian programs.

CBC is a pretty darned important national education service. I'm happy to pay in order to have it.

(Even while being really PO'ed that they've so botched curling and skating coverage, and given us such through-the-looking-glass dreck as 'Little Mosque on the Prairies'.)
