Smallc Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 (edited) The business plan for an all-weather road linking Nunavut and northern Manitoba is nearly complete, meaning construction could begin in the next five years.Plans to build the 1,200-kilometre road are currently on track, Nunavut transportation officials told business leaders at the Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce meeting this week in Rankin Inlet. "We're working with Manitoba and the Kivalliq Inuit Association, and we're working to complete the business case study," Alan Johnson, the Nunavut government's manager of transportation planning, told CBC News on Wednesday. jdobbin Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Interesting.... We have been talking about this on this forum from time to time. A road to from Manitoba to Nunavut would go a long way to asserting sovereignty in the north, developing communities and bringing in supplies from Gillam through to Churchill and up to the Nunavut communities of Arviat, Whale Cove and Rankin Inlet. The cost is about $1.2 billion but the economic savings in transporting supplies is likely to recovered in a short time. Moreover, it means that hydro power could flow north along the road and end the dependence on fossil fuels in many communities. Quote
Smallc Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 We have been talking about this on this forum from time to time. developing communities and bringing in supplies from Gillam When they continue the road up from Gillam, they had better improve the road to gillam. It's apparently getting terrible. Quote

All it takes is money! Thanks for posting about this I just emailed the link to a friend of mine who's spent a lot of time in N Manitoba in the past. Quote

It's apparently getting terrible. not as bad as some roads in saskatchewan. However this is a good idea, expect lots of traffic on it and this would be extremely beneficial to Churchill. Expect to see lots of super b's on that road in the future. Looks like they want to get them diamonds and uranium out of there on truck and quickly. With such abundant supplies of minerals up north, a road like that would pay for itself very quickly. Molly Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 Long overdue. I couldn't believe it when the feds were working toward the abandonment of that rail line and port at Churchill. Simple 'nation building' demanded its presence, and more. Quote "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" — L.
