This is certainly not true.

The oilpatch in general has far more extensive compulsory drug testing than just about any other industry.

No doubt there are pot smokers in the biz, but they have to be careful not to get caught with a mandatory pee test or they are done like dinner and looking for a job.

Working in Alberta during the late eighties - my money was spent on booze. It was my duty to stimulate the economy by getting as drunk as possible with all that disposable cash. As for your possible pot head on sight....you had better check for cocaine - it's becoming the drug of choice out there - But I doubt that the bosses would care...pot makes you lazy - where as the coke would guarentee a good days work out of the fools...with one problem in the end - total physical and mental collapse - by then it won't matter - they just send in some fresh meat.
