BC_chick Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 (edited) OTTAWA -- New Democrat Leader Jack Layton called Monday for all federal leaders to put their campaigns on hold for an emergency all-party meeting on the unfolding financial crisis in the U.S and its implications for Canadians. Layton's proposal came after the U.S. House of Representatives voted down President George W. Bush's bailout package for the American banking system. Jack Layton says Canadians could draw comfort knowing politicians are discussing the issue. ( Brett Gundlock / Canwest News Service ) Layton insisted Canadians could "draw some comfort" from their political leaders putting aside their partisan campaigning to meet on Wednesday afternoon -- but the prospect was immediately dismissed by the Prime Minister's Office. This has got to be a joke. Don't get me wrong, I believe in many of the NDP platforms and I really like Jack Layton, but I thought McCain asking for a suspension of campaigns was ridiculous, yet alone us. After all, McCain could be ridiculed for running for POTUS when he can't even muti-task a campaign and a financial crisis at the same time. But our party leaders?!? Not only would they show that they can't multi-task, but unlike McCain, they're not even in a position to be able to have the slightest impact on the economy... not that McCain did either, but at least his vote, decision, and persuasion could have had an impact. Sorry Mr Layton, it doesn't give me any "comfort" to know that our party-leaders need to come to screeching halt tomorrow to discuss something they have no control over. But thanks for the laughs. GostHacked Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 OMG Layton is pulling a McCain ..... Quote
independent Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 He's just trying to make himself look like a take-charge person... You are quite correct Kengs333. His percentage of the popular vote is very close to the Liberals and he is trying to sell himself as the opposition party. Popular vote does not get you in. I do not think he will come close to getting enoungh seats to be the opposition. But hey you can not fault the guy for trying. Quote

That's it in a nutshell. Pure grandstanding, just like McCain. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

It seems to be the NDP lot in politics to look decent during an election campaign and then flounders in the end when everybody rushes back to the Liberals. As Bryson said during the X-Challenge debate: "the NDP don't understand the economy..."--which is why they will never form the government, or the opposition. Quote
mcrobert Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 It's not a bad idea really considering if their economy falls ours will go right behind it. Oh and we wont have the luxury of the 1-2yr lag that we commonly see. But yeah, he should have simply started raising the key issues with the people, talking about what it really means and the scenarios are etc.. Quote
