blueblood Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 I have to agree with M.Dancer on this one. The Libs had a lot of time in power to do things like this and they didn't. They refused labels that would identify GMO's, they allowed (as does this gov't) round-up ready crops (do I want to eat round up or gmo's unknowingly?). Today was a good step (if it actually goes through as you have noted) but really it is only a first step in keeping citizenry apprised of what they are consuming. What is the big deal with GMO's, their only modification is that they produce more product, better product, and can be grown more efficiently. Having a crop roundup ready means it gets sprayed with less chemicals than non-roundup ready crops. Then there is those kids in Asia where they genetically modified rice to include nutrients so that people won't go blind over there. If GMO's were as bad as people say they are and do all these horrible things, why would a company risk tanking their share price and going pretty much bankrupt? It is in the company's best interest to keep to not poison their customers which would in turn ruin their company. This anti-GMO greenpeace malarkey is proposterous, and those kids who aren't blind in South Asia right now are proof of it. Fortunata Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 The problem I have with GMO's is who owns it. I refuse to support Monsanto and other huge companies that control our food unless I absolutely have to. Quote

What I don't understand is why the food industry is so opposed to disclosure. I just want to know what is in my food: good, bad, or indifferent. I do not believe that any mfr should be allowed to produce any food product and not be fully transparent with regards to what it is that I'm eating. Quote
margrace Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 What was the issue with Highliner fish? That is not fished in Canada, or that it is not safe? Most Canadians in our area believed they were supporting the fisherman of the Maritimes by buying a very trusted produce. It was a slap in the face to most of us to find very little or none of the fish produced by Highliner and saying it was Canadian was actually that. Quote

Exactly, why are the so afraid to have it on the labels. That very fact makes them suspicious. Quote
scribblet Posted May 23, 2008 Author Report Posted May 23, 2008 EXACTLY, no place to sell your produce,so where does it go, under factories, well we know that really works, under houses, who can afford them when the factories all close. I don't understand your post, what do you mean the produce goes under factories and under houses, and exactly why would a government want this to happen - it sure makes no sense. Here's something from highliner, they say that the fish on W-5 SEGMENT is not one of their products. http://www.highliner.com/site/eng/art0044.asp Our favourite fish is tilapia, grouper and seabass, can't get that from Canada... Kitchener Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 It's a good decision, from what I can tell. I know a lot of apple farmers who've been incensed about this for a long time, just because of the apple juice situation. Quote
