BigAl Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I work pretty hard, personally. Oh, clearly. I would be the last person to say that *all* Americans (or Canadians for that matter) don't want to work hard. That's why I used the modifier "most". Quote
BigAl Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I disagree...the American Dream is alive and well, that dream being the potential reward for hard work and risk taking. I have never read a description of the Canadian Dream is such a thing exists...beyond extended EI payments. haha. Agreed -- there doesn't seem to be much of a Canadian Dream per se, but I would argue that the American Dream has been perverted from "work hard, do well" to "get rich quick". I don't know...it just seems to me that a lot of people would rather take the easy route and "come into" money, rather than spending their whole lives scraping up from the bottom to the illustrious top, you know? jbg Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 You don't get to nearly 8000 posts on an obscure Internet forum without working hard.I post during "thinking breaks" at work while I am trying to figure out how to resolve a client's problem, or from home. I put in around 50 hours a week of legitimate work. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

That's true...there are many Americans who want a short cut to riches....but the American dream was never about extreme wealth. The "dream" was more about the fundamental value of hard work and persistance to achieve higher economic status for oneself and, eventually, the next generation. This gave rise to the hallowed and now beseiged "Middle Class". The American dream was always a modest affair compared to the lives of the "Rich and Famous'. I'm sure that Canadians have an equivalent work ethic "dream" even if it has not been articulated as such. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
GostHacked Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 You don't much about Ms. Rice's humble beginnings....and couldn't even hold up her bra. I thought the bra was for her balls. Because she seems to have more balls than most of her male counterparts. Quote
