margrace Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Her is a story on downer cows and the fact that they are being killed and then the meat used for the school programs. Whatever happened to the fact that these cows may carry Mad Cow Disease. http://www.hsus.org/ Read come down on cruely, or watch the video. Canada has been punished and our farmers put into bankruptcy by any suggestion of BSE so are these cows tested and why feed their children sick cows. Quote

Canada has been punished and our farmers put into bankruptcy by any suggestion of BSE so are these cows tested and why feed their children sick cows. First and foremost - this is a U.S. of A. problem. It is illegal to do this in Canada. If it were to happen in Canada, it would cause the facility to be shut down and the owners fined / jailed. The readers need to know this, as it can easily become misconstrued as common North American slaughter house policy. Secondly - what happens in the U.S. of A. is not our problem. As much as I disagree with this practise we have no control what a foreign nation does to its people. I might add that in my opinion we use our "superior moral" values as a way to interfere in others lives far too often. You can be sure that the average U.S. of A. rancher and farmer does not approve of this kill practise either. It is dollar driven. As for cruelty - the fact that the horse lovers have successfully cancelled horse slaughter in the U.S. of A. means the vast majority that are shipped - go to Mexico. There they are killed in many slaughter facilities by stabbing them in the spinal column. I have very little time for the Humane Society of the U.S. of A. or for Canada. They manage to create a problem and then profit from it. Rabid anti-hunter programs and money to politicians promoting so called humane solutions. Borg Quote

Pretty disgusting! Quote Insults are the ammunition of the unintelligent - do not use them. It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions. Derogatory terms such as "loser", "idiot", etc are not permitted unless the context clearly implies that it is not serious. Rule of thumb: Play the ball, not the person (i.e. tackle the argument, not the person making it).
M.Dancer Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I have never understood the aversion to horse meat. There used to be quite a few horse butchers in Montreal and you could get a reasonably priced above average cut of meat....here in Toronto I have never seen any. guyser Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I have never understood the aversion to horse meat. Does it taste like chicken? Seriously, what is the taste of horse like? Downer cows and downer pigs cannot be slaughtered . Online (kill floor) inspectors will stop it. However, if the downer is between the pens and no one is looking.... That said, inspectors get a tray of the offals of all the slaughtered animals and can see if there are any problems. If you like chinese food, that may not be what one normally considers to be "pork" in your food! Yummy! Quote
M.Dancer Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Does it taste like chicken? Seriously, what is the taste of horse like? Like red meat. There was a cheap bistro in Paris called Roger le Frite that made the best horse striploin. A steak with frites and salad and a 1/2 litre of wine costed about $7.00 in 1980 Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Wilber Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Does it taste like chicken? Seriously, what is the taste of horse like? Pretty good. Like MD I've had it in Europe where it is quite common. I'm a horse lover though and will avoid it if possible because of that. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
