Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he'll have some advice for the country's provincial and territorial leaders when he meets them for a working dinner on Friday at his Ottawa residence.

In a one-on-one interview with CTV Atlantic anchor Steve Murphy, the prime minister said he'll advise the leaders not to undertake long-term expenditures or tax reductions. He said the U.S. and global economies appear to be slowing down and so Canadian leaders will need to be financially cautious.

The recent rise of the Canadian dollar, high oil prices, and a slowing housing market and economy in the U.S. have already affected some sectors of the Canadian economy, including forestry and the manufacturing industries. On Thursday, Harper announced a $1-billion aid package to help workers in towns and industries that are struggling with chronic unemployment or layoffs.

"My advice to the premiers when we put this kind of community trust money on the table, when they get their enhanced equalization, as some will get: use that money for short term transitional stuff. Don't commit yourself to longer term things you may not be able to sustain," he said.

Although Harper said he believes that Canada is well-positioned to deal with a potential downturn in the economy, he said that in the long-term, Canadians will have to deal with an issue that's already starting to manifest itself -- a skilled labour shortage.

This advice seems a little rich from a government sending shovel fulls of money out the door every day and decreasing taxes at the same time.

Hey cap, I think this is track 17 on the CD.

Getting close to boxed-set territory!

Dion is still too scared to vote against the government on any issue. I'm sure we can fill two more CDs of jdobbin's scripted messages and issue a first edition boxed set late in '09. The perfect Christmas gift for diehard Liberals.

It is obvious that your personalizing in posts is about what we can expect from diehard Tories.

I've only been a Conservative supporter for the last 4 years. I had always voted Liberal in the past. Until the Liberals regain my trust they will not win my vote. If that makes me a diehard Conservative, so be it.

But you must admit, jd, your repetitious anti-Conservative threads and points get boring and do result in generating a certain amount of amusement.

There are many avenues to counter your boredom that don't have to involve personalizing. I haven't done with with you to my knowledge and I expect the least you could do is do the same. If you find my posts boring, ignore them. If you have a point to make that is contrary, make it. I'd rather not have to put you on ignore because there have been a few interesting posts that you have made.

Ahh... see now you guys weren't around I suppose when the Liberals were in power... Its the way it goes.

And I hope I won't be around when the Liberals come back because that means I will be....dead.

Thank you for the compliment. I call a truce and will try to be good.

Will the truce be honoured? Enquiring minds want to know!

The interesting thing about this attack is it wouldn't have taken much to come up with a very credible and realistic criticism of this announcement. Alas, in the rush to flood the board and somehow prove a point with volume over quality the reasonable issue with this announcement was missed.

I think the point that the announcement made by the government was good news all around was clearly made. The rest is just, well how should I put it, entertaining.

Ah but the G&M says Harper won't give the Billion dollars to help the provinces loss of jobs unless his budget passes. Bit of blackmail but then all government do that. Reminds me of an bit of information from a newly immigrated Scotsman. The working man comes home on pay day and tosses his pay cheque to the back of the bed. Got it.

How do you expect him to give money if the budget fails to pass.

You realize if he doesn't win the budget vote, the government will fall?

RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS

Yup that's the valid criticism I alluded to earlier. Not really a big deal, but it is a very smart political move.

Almost guarantees we make the fixed election date.

Tosses his pay cheque to the back of the bed?
