Leafless Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 The federal government is pursuing an "irresponsible" policy of recruiting francophone immigrants to minority French communities in English Canada when it should be sending them instead to the more robust francophone regions of Quebec, New Brunswick, and Eastern Ontario, a controversial University of Ottawa professor argues in a forthcoming journal. Nice to know the federal government is pro-French and again, ignores the English minority in Quebec. But what is even dumber is the feds are using mainly majority English Canadian tax dollars to support a racist policy. Immigration has been a component of language policy at least since 2001, when Parliament passed the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act identifying one of the objectives of immigration as: "to support and assist the development of minority official languages communities in Canada." This of course means supporting the French language as English needs no formal linguistic introduction. http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/s...9252d81&p=1 Quote

I write on my dollars sent to Ottawa "english only use on the first $100, then french only on the next $40, and so on ". Doesnt everyone do that? They must if Ottawa knows which are english or french dollars. Quote

Language falls under provincial jurisdiction not federal and I don't remember being part of a referendum approving or disapproving federal linguistic intervention. You can write whatever you choose on your dollars but the fact remains the federal linguistic policy is racist. Quote
August1991 Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 (edited) From link above: In his article, "The contribution of immigration to franco-phone populations outside Quebec," to be published in the journal Francophonies d'Amérique, adjunct professor Charles Castonguay argues that a large proportion of francophone immigrants become anglicized when they move to small French communities in Canada, and end up bolstering the English-speaking population rather than the French-speaking minority."It's a stupid program," Mr. Castonguay said in an interview. "We're wasting our bloody money here, because we're actually recruiting anglophones." If the federal government is serious about recruiting francophone immigrants, it should encourage them to settle in traditional French-speaking areas like the village shown above, says Charles Castonguay, not where francophones are in the minority But Commissioner of Official Languages Graham Fraser defended the immigration policy. "I think it's absolutely critical for the future of French-speaking minority communities across Canada that they have access to immigration, to a stream of newcomers," Mr. Fraser said. First, Canadian taxpayers paid for all this nonsensical "research". Why? Second, Harper accurately said that Canada is a country of two languages but it's not a bilingual country. Third, as to bilingualism, it's not a wise idea to put all one's eggs in one basket. IMHO, it's wiser to see things from different angles since one never knows.
