I'm making prefer sense, which of the Liberals have taken taxpayers money? You can't answer because all of Chretiens supports are gone and new people are there, some for the first time in politics. So when you say the Liberal, are crooks or corrupt or whatever you want to label them it can't apply until THEY do something wrong. I judge the Cons are what Harper or his members do or don't do and there is the difference.

I've never aligned myself with a particular party; in fact, I find it a little amusing and/or disconcerting that so many treat politics as a team sport. Do so many good ideas really have to be discarded, discredited and sneered at simply because they were created by a different party? I know our system and the game we call politics promotes this kind of wasteful, childish, unproductive behaviour so maybe it’s time to change the system…but I digress.

I have always been a little socially progressive and fiscally conservative. So, in the past my support has generally been behind the PC party. However, the newest incarnation of the blue team is no longer socially progressive or even socially moderate in my opinion. Currently, the Liberal party is a better fit for PCers than the CPC.

Add in the fact that the CPC has sprayed RoundUp all over the grassroots and adopted a top down model, kicked democracy in the nads by preventing MPs from representing their constituents, in some cases even preventing riding associations from selecting their own candidate and has had no problem spending and I have a real hard time supporting them. Things can change though…15 years ago who would have thought the Liberals would be the main, moderate, fiscally conservative political option in Canada.

If so, why single out the Conservatives with the sterotypes below that apply to all the mainstream parties?

It actually makes a lot of sense that the "progressive" conservatives would feel at home in the Liberal party now. The Liberal party is in about the same place in the political spectrum that the progressive conservatives used to hold, the NDP are now pretty much where the Liberals used to be. Funny I started off as a conservative, then moved to the Liberals during the Cretien years, I couldn't vote for Martin, becuase I felt he was too much in the pocket of big business, and now I give all my support and donations to Jack Layton and the NDP. I am seriously considering moving back to the Liberal party myself though. Its not that I have lost faith in Jack Layton, I honestly think he is the best choice to protect Canada's interests. It is purely because I would do anything to rid Canada of the kind of conservatives that are currently destroying our country and selling us out to the US.

If I had to choose between a Harper conservative and a chimp, the chimp would definitely get my vote, no question.

I think you may have lost track of where the center is - as have the Liberals. When Labour starts supporting the Liberals, you know that the NDP have lost their way and that the Liberals have drifted Left. The Conservatives have managed to fill some of that void by moving to the Center. The Liberals' hand is being forced by the NDP and Greens. Dion doesn't seem to have the political smarts (Policvies would help) to reach Left without losing his "Center" voters.

Which is the greatest reason to believe the next election will lead to a CPC majority.

I doubt we'll see a majority government next time around, it'll be a minority. Even then I'd hope the Liberals would lose, depose Dion, and then elect someone like Michael Ignatieff so we have a real choice next time around.

I was actually thinking that Justin Trudeau might take a run at it. I bet he could win a majority for the Liberals.

Canada could use another Prime Minister Trudeau.

Canada east of the Manitoba/Ontario border....

Harper would love to take on Justin in an election.

Alas times have changed since Keith Davy coined the phrase "Screw the West We'll Take the Rest" while running the Liberals campaign for Trudeau the Elder in 1980.

The Liberal brand is not enhanced with a younger Trudeau as leader in Quebec, so how exactly would he build that majority?

There were quite a few former Progressive Conservatives were not happy when their party merged with the Alliance. Some joined the Liberals immediately, some sat on the sidelines, some formed the Progressive party and some continued to call themselves PC in the Senate and elsewhere.

It is hard to say what room is in the Conservative party for some of the Progressive wing of the party, especially those who called themselves "Red Tories." I can't think of a Red Tory in the present Conservatives at all.

It remains to be seen what sort of influence the Progressives will have on the Liberals. Possibly they will see eye to eye on many social issues and take a different tact on some economic ones.

Any old port in a storm.

After all one has to put food on the table and what better way to do it than be paid by "the old guard?"

Those one time cons were always fiberals at heart anyway. Perhaps that is why the party was so unsuccessful in the past.

One wonders if Harper somehow reached out to the former PCs whether he would have his majority now. He still sits at 36% in the polls and has barely budged from there since the election.

Exactly. Harper has reached out to former PCs. The vast majority of former PCs have joined the party.

How many of these 'Progressive Canadians' joined the Liberals in total? Less than 100?

Wow, that would have a big impact on the polls.

I am sure he considered it - but at what price - why bring trouble on board.

Personally I am quite happy he cut them loose / they left.

I would not want those guys at my kitchen table - unless I used plastic forks. Real silverware might just disappear.

Lots of people would like to piss on that dead guys grave - he ruined a lot of folks in the west financially.

In fact I wish he would run.

That supposed trudeau charm brings out the hate in a lot of folks in the west.

Worst thing that happened to canada was electing him.

I believe the next trudeau would dive to the bottom of the polls. Riding on daddy's shirt tail he is.

Times are different today.

Please .... lets get him inot the race.

So did Flaherty. Save some for him too.

This is the intellectual level of the average liberal doctrinaire.

Exactly. Then again I think it would take a lot for a chimp to steal $1.14 million in taxpayer dollars.

Justin Trudeau needs to improve his public speaking skills. I don't think he's got what it takes in that department. I listened to a couple of his speeches (they're all on youtube). He's full of grandiose statements without any substance. He can't speak for 5 minutes without invoking his father's name. Boring!!!

The best speech he ever made was at PET's funeral. PET's followers immediately saw Justin as a budding Prime Minister.

I guess I'd rather be taxed in bananas. After all, no one would have cared as much is brown paper bags full of bananas had gone missing...maybe there is something to be said for electing Liberals...
