Amazing Atheist Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 We have the Charter of Civil Rights.... The charter works well and guarantees the rights to free speech and consciousness etc. I personally do not feel we need to write a constitution. The US has a constitution and look at where they are headed in terms of their civil rights. I think the only Canadians need to do is not take their already existing civil rights for granted. Now to answer these questions. Are Canadians finally educated enough to write their own constitution? Yes and No. Some Canadians are smart enough to write a constitution this being said most people don't really pay that much attention to the inner working of the government. However the people should be involved in such a process every step of the way. Should the constitution be for controlling government powers? Yes and No. A constitution needs to apply to everyone including those in government. Do you want the constitution to for a democratic government ? No. What would the government need with a constitution? Do you want a dictatorship government where the government writes its own constitution so itcan do whatever it wants? No === Canadians wrote the Charter of Civil Rights which is a part of our constitution and in my opinion the most important part as it deals with our civil rights as a people. If Canadians want to ensure their freedom a piece of paper is not the way to do it. Canadians must never fear the government, fearing the government almost always leads to oppression and likewise with xenophobia as well. We must remember here that a paper with some rules and rights on it don't make you free, the people make themselves free because after all no one can just take power the people have to give it to them. Leafless Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 Are Canadians finally educated enough to write their own constitution? No, education has little to do with this matter if Quebec remains in confederation. No one could write a Canadian constitution in a country that contains two official groups English and French with opposing and conflicting political ideologies. That is why federalism does not work to-day and why our current constitution racially discriminates. This is why Canadian politicians decided to only allow provinces to ratify our current constitution rather than allow the people of Canada to ratify it, because politicians knew Canadians would never ratify the 'Charter' judging from the failure of the Canadian electorate to ratify the Charlottetown Accord. Should the constitution be for controlling government powers? Yes, 100% by national referendum on matters that could affect the lives Canadian citizens collectively. Do you want the constitution to for a democratic government ? Yes. Do you want a dictatorship government where the government writes its own constitution so it can do whatever it wants? No, that is what we have now and it clearly does not work for majority concerns. Quote
