mikedavid00 Posted October 27, 2007 Author Report Posted October 27, 2007 The ten million was over and above Arar's legal fees."In January, Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a formal apology to Arar while announcing he will receive $12.5 million in compensation. The package includes $10.5 million for pain and suffering and another $2 million for Arar's legal fees." Link Oh yes that's right I forgot that. So he's a multi-millionaire now from our tax dollars in order to help Stephen Harpers political career. He'll work on sponsoring more of his family over and sueing the US for more millions. Man.. moving to Canada must be the best gift his Dad ever gave him. We're all the suckers. Leafless Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 No kidding. What we have here is a failure to matriculate What we have here are remmants of genetically predisposed loyalist, who are accustomed to be beaten down, oppressed and loyal to British rule and passed on to your typical Canadian who have evolved into politically correct morons, loyal to minority rule and the interest of foreign cultures. Go to hell, Higgly, you Arab sympathizer. Quote
ft.niagara Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Go to hell, Higgly, you Arab sympathizer. I am surprised that this is such a hot topic here. It is almost as if there is nothing else to talk about. The link given by AW is a CBC link. I have seen no mention of it in American websites or newspapers. I would think that mistakes happen, sorry. If there is such as thing as a terrorist network, and a 'War on Terror', there are casualties. Good people get killed or injured by action, and inaction. The above sentiment has merit. Mr. Higgly, for his own purpose, seems to be totally biased. Quote
daniel Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 ... Go to hell, Higgly, you Arab sympathizer. I wonder if anybody here has read or seen "To Kill a Mockingbird"? Quote

He now pays taxes more than 99% of all other canadians. Imagine that eh ? Quote

Go to hell, Higgly, you Arab sympathizer. No. What we have here is someone who believes in the rule of law. Who believes that we are all innocent until proven guilty... That we have, as citizens, a right to expect that our country will deliver unto us due process. Mr. Arar, who has been shown guilty of nothing was tortured. If you do not believe that, I refer you to the findings of Justice O'Connor. Were it not for the bravery of his wife, he would probably still be in that Syrian prison, dead or alive. I have only scorn and derision for the opinions of those of you who feel that Mr Arar should continue to be punished, apparently for no other reason than that he is of Arab descent. That means you, buster. Quote "We have seen the enemy and he is us!". Pogo (Walt Kelly).
guyser Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 What? He's paying his taxes, THROUGH our taxes. He is ? So is stevey, and for that matter every other govt employee. Guess you want them deported too? Quote
Guest American Woman Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 (edited) Are you sure he's paying taxes? Sounds as if it may have been a tax-free settlement, which would make sense. Why would the government pay him money and then expect him to give a chunk back to them? It was the horrific and inexcusable abuse of a Canadian whose record was cleared without equivocation by a $16 million public inquiry last year. But 10.5 million? Tax free dollars? That's compensation on a lottery jackpot scale. ....Harper was clearly apprehensive the cash payout would appear excessive to the average Canadian, who would have to work 272 years to match the settlement's amount, while paying taxes along the way. You are right of course, intitially, however he will earn income from that and pay on that, or on anything he buys. But I stand corrected by AW. Thank you. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 I guess there's no way to escape taxes altogether, eh? And your welcome. Quote
margrace Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 You know what is wrong with Arar, he is a good looking educated Canadian and he is of Arab descent. For people trying to create a holy war against the Islamic people that is an anethma (sP) Quote
Higgly Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 (edited) You know, there is a song from West Side Story that says why people come to these shores (American and Canadian too). Sondheim and Bernstein said it so well.... I like to be in America! For the most part, people who come here come for the right reasons, and while few may come for the wrong reasons, the number who come here because they believe in the promise of our culture and political system are in the majority. We really should put more faith in our strengths and less in our weaknesses. What happened to Arar was a betrayal of the most fundamental elements of that promise. These people connect us to the world in a way that we could never achieve on our own. Read Sterling Seagrave's "The Lords of the Rim: The Invisible Empire of the Overseas Chinese" which describes the effect of the Overseas Chinese on our culture, our economy, and our world. We have enjoyed tremendous benefit from every immigration to our country, and we will enjoy still more from those still coming and yet to come. Most Arabs it appears, judging from media photos mostly have neatly trimmed beards and expensive suits when on the make for extraordinary national windfalls. Quote
