Folks who think Bush orchestrated 9/11 look at the rest of us who know it was Muslim terrorists and call us "sheeple". I feel your repeated use of the word libertarian to describe anyone who does not fit with your political thinking kinda follows the same gist. -
Yup....before we get too wrapped up in this you need to know I've still got one toe in the reservation so to speak. Doesn't make me a hero or special or some authority on the subject but when I'm dissing indians I do it for a good reason. I made the prison quip because ndns and Metis comprise less then 10% of the population of the prairies now but constitute more then 50% of the inmates.

When I was on the first tour of Bosnia we had a responsibility to ensure that the local civilian and military police in a war zone did not abuse their civil authority. What we allow currently in Canada, random roadside stops so police can visually inspect the readily visible contents of your vehicle, check your physical status through sniff test and observations and then confirm you are carrying identification papers for yourself, your passengers and the vehicle itself are all actually disallowed under international law. We teach foreign authorities that these practices are not acceptable as they transition to a democracy and that everyone has the right to travel within their own country without requiring identification (try getting on a bus or airline in Canada as well), without interruption for random inspections and without being unduly detained. But in Canada we have grown so lethargic to our freedoms they have become meaningless. Whenever someone throws out the consideration that the restriction imposed is in the name of "safety or tolerance" we are supposed to surrender it without further protest. If drinking and driving is a problem set the rate at .01 and take away a persons right to drive for life on a first offence, but don't piss around with my personal liberty in order that the hard choices don't have to be made. I wonder if I will every live long enough that some thud from a place like Chad will be here lecturing Canadians on the principles of democracy. Could happen I suppose, look at how all the priests, ministers and missionaries for a variety of religions are now coming out of Africa to re-evangelize Europe.

I think it is difficult to take away something such as alcohol but when it comes to something that was never legal in the first place I don't see how lifting the prohibition does anything but increase consumption. Experience suggests that problems associated with crime will not disappear as evidenced in Amsterdam when organised crime actually became more involved after prostitution was legalised, especially through the international trafficking of women, rather then the complete disappearance that was anticipated. I suppose this could be argued as an isolated case as Amsterdam has become somewhat of a drug and sex tourist destination but I don't really see the criminal element ever getting out of the sex or drug trades no matter how cheap and available you make things. These guys won't just fold their chairs and go home, they'll come up with something new. So legalise everything then right? Hey, I'm a true Libertarian. I believe everything should be your choice. However, under the current system I'm expected to pay for the care and rehabilitation of people so in order to minimise what I have to pay I will advocate that certain life styles choices be restricted.

No. Conventional wisdom means that it is generally accepted as fact at the moment but open to interpretation if actually scrutinsed down the road. It is not conventional wisdom. You go and do what you're told. Period. It is enshrined in law. Just want to make sure we are clear on this. Sometimes folks think soldiers can decide a war is "illegal" or "immoral" or some other nonsense and have some sort of justification to pick and choose operations. That's why you get some people out east who welcome dirty filthy cowardly US army deserters. Anyway, just a pet peeve. Cheers -

Point of order. Unless they are themselves military then every place the government sends them is the right place no questions asked. -
Of course. I'm not advocating those items should be illegal. I am simply illustrating that if you increase availability of any product or service that was formally illegal or difficult to access for the general population then there will be a corresponding increase in consumption. For whatever reason, there is some goofy idea going around in some quarters here that prohibition of anything actually leads to increased usage. I'm a free range Albertan who still doesn't wear his seatbelt and stores loaded rifles under the truck seat in case I spot something that needs shooting. I'm not advocating bubble wrapped kids and the nanny state that seems to be the flavour for the baby boomer's offspring. I am just saying that if you legalise prostitution you will increase consumption. Now whether that is good or bad is a separate argument.

I'm not so sure. I suppose the maritimes are that way. Quebec is something else altogether. Ontario is drastically different between the north and the south. The prairies are pretty much the same while interior and mainland BC are completely different. I think it is more a collection of regions. -

I'm sure in Toronto that when it comes to assless chaps, the old 'its five o'clock somewhere in the world' philosophy reigns supreme. -
Actually, it's the old indian racists that form the most solid unwavering voting majority in Alberta. Indian racists are more likely to vote Conservative while white racists vote for parties like the CHP. Middle East racists and terrorist sympathisers by and large throw their support behind the Liberals but of course this is a constant across Canada and not just Alberta. Asian racists only vote if one of their realtors is running. Black racists are generally too busy involved with hectic drive by shooting and break and entry schedules they abstain. Now try and keep your stereotypes straight.

Nope. All the Liberals are the same regardless of what they call their party. Everyone of them. There ain't a lick of difference between the average Liberal MP vs Conservative MP vs PC MP over the past 50 years. Only discernible difference was Reform. Otherwise, once in power in Ottawa they are all the same. Even the Bloc.

Quasi independent states (colonies anyway) coming together to form a country is the vary basis of Confederation. -

In Alberta, some celebrate 'Ontario Heritage Days' by dressing in assless chaps and publicly parading through the arts district once a year. I understand other communities with sizable Ontario immigrant populations have similar festivals. -
Prohibition is a great example. Since we don't know how much alcohol the bad guys produced it is hard to compare consumption/production rates during this period. But some of the hard statistics we do know are that everywhere medical records were kept, such as NY and Chicago, both the rates of death by alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver dropped by around 80-90% and suicide rates also declined during those years by an average of 50%. Ref Drug Library Possibly a coincidence? Sure I suppose. But most casual observers would draw the conclusion that consumption was dramatically reduced. I honestly don't see how people can debate that point. Now whether it was the right thing to do is a completely separate argument.

I'm not going to sit here and try and convince you of a hypothetical tactical extraction and revenge operation because it makes me look like a bigger dick then I am (someone insert witty quip here). However, I'd rather be dead then allow my daughter to be under the circumstances you described and as a well insured atheist I'm not overly concerned with death when weighed against living under that sort of nightmare and I am equally unimpressed that most so called parents would be more concerned about their own hides then their daughters. On a side note, I remember my grandpa telling me that the two largest problems with modern life was the pace was too fast to enjoy it and domestic abuse was almost unheard of when your pa and six brothers went to discuss your bruise with your husband. I can buy tobacco anywhere. Convenience stores, drug stores, grocery stores, reservations, truck stops, gut wagons, even gas stations that sell only tobacco and gas, not even any oil. In fact, I can't be in any built up area where I can't throw a rock and within it's circumference can't find someone to buy them from. I'm supposed to believe the government has cracked down because there are less vending machines and in the city they want you to smoke outside or put blankets over the displays? Hell, I can still smoke in the UFA I shop at.

Holy moly. Not a g/d thread to be found on the landmark football game in Moncton this summer. This is the most Ontariocentric forum passing itself off as Canadian that I have ever seen anywhere. Thank your lucky stars I'm here. We'll start by educating you about the greatest game on earth and our only true national sport. It is a game we invented and dominated globally for almost 100 years. A good little vid despite the Trudeau (SOB) reference:

RCMP have made a breakthrough in the case of the pipeline bombings on the Alberta and B.C. border. Six explosions have taken place at Encana well sites since 2008, and although eco-activist Weibo Ludwig was taken into custody last January, no charges were ever laid. Now RCMP report they have been able to get DNA from a letter sent by the alleged bomber to a newspaper in Dawson Creek. RCMP won't say if they know who that DNA belongs to. My link Gosh, I wonder who?

Alberta will side with Ottawa, if the Harper government wants to give police the power to conduct random roadside breath tests. Unlike Checkstops, where police admit seasoned drinkers can slip through the net, adding an automatic breath test to the mix is seen as an overwhelmingly successful way to nab more drunk drivers. My link There is just no respect for freedom of movement any more. But what is more disturbing is that the majority probably support Harper's liberals as they ram one more piece of big brother in the name of safety down our throats following the 40 year trail blazed Progressive liberals and the Liberal liberals. The Wildrose can't get elected fast enough.
