  1. A justice system that punishes criminals starts with a legal system, where the accused is deemed innocent until found guilty, is protection against the use of violence in order to obtain evidence, as access to adequate legal representation, and can (directly or through his/her lawyer) know what it is accused of and challenge the evidence presented.
  2. Let's forget for a moment that the actions of the American government have been deemed illegal again and again in American courts; that's indeed besides the point. What's relevant is that the Government of Canada, through its representatives, has engaged in actions contrary to Canadian law - namely the interrogation of a suspect of crime in conditions that amount to turture. Having engaged in such actions, the Government has a legal obligation to make reasonable efforts to have it stop, that is to have Khadr brought back to Ccanada. It's important to note that no Canadian court has directed the U.S Government to do anything. Our courts have directed the Canadian Government to do its job by requesting the return of Omar Khadr. Big difference.
  3. It is not a tangential issue. The Canadian officials in question were acting on behalf of the Government. By not asking for Khadr's return, the Government is legitimizing the process he had been submitted to, including the illegal interrogations. Besides, it is the Government's job to defend the rights of its citizens above, including asking that they not be subjected to treatment contrary to fundamental justice.
  4. ... who happens to be right. I could point out that the government is made up of politicians, who in many cases will do what will get them votes instead of following the law. But suffice to say that the Government is not above the laws, and is not above the Constitution. they have the right and the obligation to strike down laws, actions and policies contrary to the Constitution. Any other area where you should throw out the rule of law? Let's deal with them in one big piece of legislation. Good, that would be one rare shining moment for them. Instead of saying the truth, which is that the Parliament would have recognized that the rule of law applies to Government too. The U.S. won't keep Khadr, because of the mess THEY created. So, they do not send him here, where we would be able to try HIM n a real court of law? Where do they send him then? Pakistan? Egypt? Will the past and current government take the blame for what he does there, considering that they remained mostly silent while the U.S. government was skrewing things up and violating fundamental principles of justice.
  5. Involving the Parliament in the selection process (by vetting potential candidates or proposing a short list) is not a bad idea. But a quiz on Canadiana? Pleeeeeeeease. We're talking about choosing the Queen's representative, not Canadian Idol.
  6. Hope, or the lack thereof, also comes from the way others treat you.
  7. In other words, it does not matter if there is poverty in society, as long as it does not cost too much money. BTW, a former professor of mmine used to say "before Harris, people were on welfare an average of 3 years; under Harris, the average became 36 months".
  8. The few facts offered (such not all cultures are at the same level) are nothing but a foundation for a big lie, that some are more intelligent than others just because of their race. The facts offered are taken out of context, and any counter-argument is purposely distorted. The "ad hominem attacks" are actually needed when dealing with that kind of intellectually dishonest discourse. You are of course free to disagree.
  9. I hope the topic will find its place in the media... MAD magazine. What we have here is a combination of sore losers, right-winginuts and racists, who just cannot accept the Barck Obama won fair and square. And the usual assortment of conspiracy theorists. They want the full certificate? Even if they had it, they would still find a way to the doubt the facts. As the Honolulu Star-Bulletin stated, the public is expected to believe there has been "a vast conspiracy involving Obama's parents, state officials, the news media, the Secret Service, think tanks and a host of yet-to-be-uncovered others who have connived since Obama's birth to build a false record so that he could eventually seek the presidency 47 years later."
  10. You mean I should not buy into lictor's bull... err i mean eminently brillant theory?
  11. About how absent minded I was when I mixed names and wrote this particular post. My apologies to all.
  12. Some human races are more intelligent than others. That sure explains why the combustian engine was invented by a Birton, but not a Sami. That sure explains why the Aztecs built pyramids, but did not invent cannon powder, paper, printing like the Chinese did. That explains why the Utes, the genetic cousins of the Aztecs. did not build pyramids. That sure explains why Azkhenazi Jews perform higher in IQ. test than Jews of other cultural/geographic background, despite findings that there are few genetic differences between most of these groups.
  13. Yet another example of your intellectual dishonesty. Did I say there were roads, maps, cities? Nope. But nice try. The English settlers came from a culture with more technological knowledge. That does not make their culture or race superior or better. In fact, the treatment of Aborigenes by the British is proof that they, like any other culture, have the capacity to seek to the lowest of barbarity against their fellow humans. But the bit about arguing that I am a loser racist like you... nice try.
  14. Corrected to remove a gross error on my part. Let's not forget one thing here. If we get stuck with Khadr, it will be because the U.S government chose not to treat him according to the fundamental rule of law... a ral trial, in a real court of law.
  15. Remember, this is also the justice system where OJ Simpson litterally got away with murder. Oops, wrong country
  16. Thank you for proving I am right about you.
  17. The racism, since you talk about it, is the nonsense that you are peddling about how race is a determinant factor in intelligence. And the British settlers of australia did not start from stratch... unless you want to argue that the late-18th century British culture was worthless ;-)
  18. No doubt the first British settlers were at the margin of their society. Does not change the fact that they were from the margin of a society that was a few thousand years ahead in technology and understanding of their world compared to the Aborigenes.
  19. It is exactly because I read your drivel attentively that I know it's drivel. There is evidence to suggest that Chinese texts mentions that they've heard of a continent to the south, but that they never visited it. So much for contacts, extensive or otherwise.. The only reported contact between Australians and the outside world before the arrival of the first Europeans was trade between Maccassan fishermen and the north coast of Australia. Interestingly enough, it occured almost right before the first sightings of the continent by Europeans. Also interesting is that some of the Australian population of the northern coasts changed their CANOE building techniques, proof that they knew how to build canoes and could learn froom contact. Moving to the Deccan, its interesting that the Iron Age throughout the Indian sub-contient is contemporary of the same type of culture in Europe. India had a culture using a writing system about 3000 years before our era, a good millenium before the Indo-European invasions of the sub-continent, as well the Minoean cluture. As for your typical bit of intellectual dishonesty... claiming that I am trying to claim that races are intellectual equals. My whole point is about the FACT that race has nothing to do with intelligence or intellectual capacities. But thabks for making me laugh with that one.
  20. Those contacts with Chinese culture over the past 20000 years were so extensice that no mention of them appear in any Chinese texts. All evidence points to the fact that Australia was culturally cut from the rest of the world for more than 20000 years. And the huge technical gap between pre-European conquest populations of the Deccan and Australia is proof that your "race determines intelligence" nonsense is exactly that... nonsense. Of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that Australian Aborigenes have been deliberately pushed to the margins of society most most of the past two centuries. The evidence is there for all to see, nobody's fault but yours if you refuse to see it.
  21. Typical Argus. Write something particularly abhorent even by your own standards (and that's saying a lot), then arguing you meant something else. What you spoke about was slavery, not adoption, but nice try.
  22. And then insult everybody else.
  23. WorkOntario "jobs" in many cases imparted little skills that could be used to gain meaningful employment... Support tools (such as daycare services) were not there. In some areas, the number of OntarioWork "opportunities" did not match the number of people required to take them. As a way to save money, the Harris measures were a great success. As a way to reduce poverty, it was a failure. But then, it was never the intention.
  24. The Aborigene culture was isolated from all others on the planet for more than 25000 years, on a continent that is most desertic: a sure recipe for technological stagnation. The first English settlers were bringing with them the culture, the tools and a connection to the most technologically advanced culture on Earth. Better luck choosing an example next time.
  25. The assumption that the 2% rate is a failure is a false one. The measure of whether or not greater opportunities for women to serve their country in the military is not how many women join the Army. It's how well those who join perform. On that account, I'l take Army Guy's own experience on it,
