We don't have to abandon our beliefs just because
Cartman replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I will not identify the particular religion, but trust me, they come to your home to preach about God and stop you in parks to tell you about God. This is an invasion of privacy. I had to put up an ugly unwelcoming sign on my door telling them not to bother me and I just stopped going for walks in the park because I was getting tired of nicely telling them "no thank you". This is no mystery IMR. I am sure others have had these things happen to them also. I think I am gonna start going door to door to preach Darwinism and evolution. -

That's exactly the way I felt. I didn't really care, but then I realized how the zealots were trying to control everyone else's lives. So hypocritical. But then, what do you expect from people who invade the privacy of your own home and stop you on the streets and in parks? -
Ralph knows that this is the time to retire. This election is a given, but the PCons gotta start thinking about a replacement. There is no well known PC member besides him at the moment.

NDP Gains the Most in Latest Poll (Nov 10/04)

Its possible, but you could easily reduce the SE by decreasing your sig. level so the statistic probably holds. -
Even religious leaders are stressed out and should take it easy. Maybe workplace stress does cost too much. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20...tion041105.html

Surrey Panorama Ridge BC By-Election

We keep talking more about health care in this thread than BC health care specifically (I have done this myself). Some of us should probably post in the "Health Care" thread in federal politics. -
Thought people might find this story interesting. It claims that heavy workloads are costing the health care system billions. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20...lth_041109.html

Wow...I thought I was the only one on this forum who thought this. The average US citizen is doing alright so why mess with things? Remember that he is also a war president and rarely does a Western nation oust a sitting war prez. Kerry also offered no real alternative agenda. Democrats got too greedy. There does seem to be a divide though and I think it is the same one that exists here in Canada though more pronounced (rural/urban). The hearland of America helped push the Republicans slightly over the top (ECV) and slightly higher in the overall vote. -
NDP Gains the Most in Latest Poll (Nov 10/04)

The Atlantic percentages seem strange to me. I would like to know why the Green Party is doing slightly better there than in BC and why the Libs are so strong. -

I agree that health care is expensive Stoker, but time and time again our system has been proven to be more efficient. We get more per dollar than the US government. Don't forget, the poor in the US do get medical services and their government does pay for them eventually. I suspect that you have a point here. I would have to see the # of trained nurses first. -
Does anyone have an idea of where they think the dollar should settle? MS is happy with the increase and August claims that it is fine as long as the market decides. I kind of like it right where it is at around .85. Our products are still relatively inexpensive and we will soon return to having some purchasing power. Right now there is some profit taking but that will be eroded by competition.

Given equal access, we would expect university populations to look somewhat like any other population in society. Proportionate numbers of males, females, whites, protestants etc. This is not the case though because a new piece of rocket science demonstrates that universities are swelled with relatively wealthy people. Why do you think this is the case if there are things like student loans, jobs etc? (ps I think the study was done by some rich kid ) http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20...ies_041108.html

Question for hard-right theocrats
Cartman replied to The Terrible Sweal's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
When it comes down to it, I think that we are possibly talking about only .5% of people in Canada (being liberal). But the fuss is tremendous. As such, I suspect that strong emotions have more to do with it than calm reasoning. -
Ha! I wonder if Maple finds that an insult or a compliment? Shoulda called him a Tommy Douglas Jr. I agree that the $ has increased too fast, but I was getting worried about it being too low. It will return to equilibrium. There are a lot of seniors (and others) who rely upon investment income. IMO, you can only rely upon an articially low dollar to prop up weak businesses for so long. The serious concerns I hear are that there could be a large greenback sell off which will hurt everyone.

Surrey Panorama Ridge BC By-Election

I believe that the NDP won this by-election and show promise in the spring election because they can be trusted to not to implement individualistic medicine in the province. Campbell on the other hand cannot. -

Why privatize or create user fees when there is already sufficient funding available? User fees were implemented a long time ago and were judged to be unfair to the poor. It was done in Saskatchewan. We do have a surplus and the provinces and the feds have reached agreements already. If anything, we should be looking at ways to maintain the principles of Canada Health Care including the ideas set forth by the Romanow Report which spent some time and money going across the country listening to Canadians. I do not hear this from you. The only "update" I hear of is individualizing it and that is why I say US style health care. Updates are fine if they are the ones mentioned in the Romanow Report, but not if they include user fees and other punitive measures aimed at sick people. -

Let me get this straight. The dollar is strong, our industrial output quite high, record surpluses, a new 10 year fed/prov agreement on health care and some people still try to find alternative ways to make individuals fund health care US style (users fees, privatization etc)? I will never vote Liberal, but give them some credit. Maybe health care is actually on the mend. -
Who will speak for a united Canada/
Cartman replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Now that would be a kick in the head. Better yet, he should really shock everyone and run for the NDP! I think Ralph is just gettin too old for this stuff. He wants to retire. He will never enter federal politics. -

I think that you can declare victory now Sweal. Indeed, undisputed victory. Well done. -
Would you have me ignore Falwell's attempts to change the law? He helped Bush get elected and the Republicans now have a significant amount of power after the election. The amendment he is trying to implement would be relatively permanent. As they say, "from the reach of all legislatures and courts permanently." This is over the top and cannot be ignored...that would be ignorant.
-
Agreed. Falwell and the Moral Majority for instance. http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/09/14/Falwell.apology/ http://falwell.com/?a=p&content=1076266796 As long as it is only permanent in the US and not Canada. Oops. Falwell's petition mentions Canada too.

My prediction is that there will be an increase in violence and terrorism should Arafat die. Are you saying CdnRepublican, that there will be a reduction should he die (given that he is a terrorist)?

Off the top of my head Hugo, Germany had been a powerhouse (Bismark), then decimated by war with a weak democracy put in place afterwards. Hitler managed to pursuade people that his power grab would provide all Germans with enhanced power. He spoke against democracy and people followed even though I am sure many were scared. Would it not have been in their self-interest to push him from power? I am operating from the standpoint that the burden is on you to demonstrate that peaceful anarchy is not just a possibility, but a likelihood.
