Maybe you don't really need it that badly. Most provinces will pay for expensive medicines that are needed. Which is very generous of me, isn't it? Paying for other people's drugs. I'm a conservative. My voice is never heard either. And yet, you have a computer? And, I'm betting, a TV, DVD, microwave, etc. If you couldn't afford the kid maybe you shouldn't have had it. Or do you think it appropriate to procreate based on the theory your neighbours will be forced to pay for the resulting bills? Ever heard of the concept of self responsibility?

Will You Be joining In The Protests Against Bush?
Cartman replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The left is so low brow. Real professional post Stamps. -
Now that sounds familiar. No particular political party has a monopoly on Canadian nationalism of course, but one does have a monopoly on pro-American patriotism. Let me see...which federal party would be considered "pro-American"?
-
Sorry NC, were you referring to my post or Maple's post?

Like any other opinion, sentiment or feeling, "patriotism" (American and Canadian) is variable, not constant. That is, not everyone is equally patriotic. I think that most people agree with this statement. So, why should we be afraid to say as much? Like any other opinion, Canadian "identification with the US" is variable, not constant. I suspect most people agree with this statement. Why are we afraid to say so? I would go further and say that both of these sentiments are quite evident in Canada and that they vary by membership in certain social and political groups. For example, it may be acceptable to have a US flag as your icon on Free Dominion, but certainly not on Babble. Why is this the case when they are both Canadian forums? I have no problem indicating that which everyone knows is reality. I do have a problem when people strongly assert pro-US sentiment in Canada and I am rather tired of listening to Canadian bashing. I am tired of looking at American flags on Canadian's trucks and homes. I believe that this is done in open defiance of Canadian nationalists. Why should I refrain from saying that people who openly advance pro-American sentiment are less patriotic to Canada? I would be angry if Canadians began to dress their homes with old Soviet flags. Let me be crystal clear though, my sense is that August is a Canadian patriot. Advocating a reduction in government intervention does not make you "pro-American" but I suspect that more "pro-Americans" advance a reduction in Canadian government intervention. They are different.

Although I usually disagreed with the ideas put forth by the federal Progressive Conservatives, I always thought that they were a "Canadian brand." I think that the current Alberta PC's are a Canadian brand as well. I am not so sure about the CPC's. Are they essentially Republicans? Would anyone join a Republican Party if it was established in Canada?

I have noticed that the right is far more likely to identify with the United States than is the left. Why do some people identify so closely with US symbols? Is it some sort of social Stockholm Syndrome or something? Many people own US flags etc. Why not identify with Canadian symbols and values and buy Canadian flags? Is is not better to be a Canadian nationalist than a US nationalist living in Canada? I don't "get this" at all. As a self-identified lefty, I certainly do not have a Swedish flag or a Soviet flag.

You are correct NC. Certainly, others have it worse, but is the issue not about improving life here in Canada? I think your intent is to be optimistic and realize how good we really have it (and I generally agree with you), but I wonder if this is much solace to someone currently living in poverty and really struggling.
-
You are wrong ndpnic. It is acceptable (particularly amongst the right in my experience) to whine about being unable to own automatic weapons, it is acceptable to whine about being unable to watch Fox News, it is acceptable to whine about taxes. It is just not acceptable to complain about poverty.
-
Pardon me if I am being naive and seemingly dogmatic, but does not social assistance offer people the basics to avoid these kinds of events? I have never actually heard of a person stealing because they were hungry but of course, that does not mean it never happens. Do you have a link for us maybe?
-
Ah yes, and just like the Alliance, they never ever had any MLA's elected or formed the Official Opposition just like the Alliance? The NDP must have some corporate muscle or political insiders forcing their agenda on Albertans.
-
But think of all you do have in Canada ndpnic! The right to demand Fox News, CNN, Headline News, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC...... The right to place an American flag on your window. The right to own a gun for the exciting, if ficticious, war against the government. The right to complain about government giving too much to the poor because you are so rich. We do have to return to traditional Canadian values and stop this Bush ass kissing.

Fox News Channel ban lifted by state-censor
Cartman replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
IMO, equating a CRTC licensing decision with communism is an insult to people who truly suffered under communist rule. This includes people like my grandfather who spent 9.5 years in a Soviet labour camp after the war picking rocks in starvation like conditions with little access to clean water. Gov't regulation and communism are very different. I fail to see why this has been such a hot issue. I could understand if we only had one or two US stations or Fox put forth an entirely different product (i.e. maintained academic "experts" on various issues from both sides or spent several hours taking in-depth analyses of issues important to Canadians), but I doubt this is the case. My provider will likely include this is my "news" package which I purchased to get another channel. I suspect that I will either have to pay for Fox, drop what I want to see so that I do not have to pay for Fox, or get screwed on the price of the one channel worth buying. If I choose the latter, this changes all of my other channels and raises my pricing. It outrages me that they have obtained the right to come into Canada and indirectly raise my sat. bill for a crappy, redundant, duplicated foreign product I do not want. Some free market. The NDP should push for a reasonably priced state sat. package and charge bundle pricing for NHL hockey. -
After meeting with Canadians across the country, Romanow said that we need to have better medical coverage. Many people claimed that medical supplies and drugs were taking a major toll on people. I don't think that there are many people who simply refuse to work and demand "hand outs", but there are people who need some help to get by. We also need to ask why we have a massive surplus and a massive surplus in the EI fund (and the AG has just criticized the gov't for this surplus) but eligibility requirements for benefits are so stringent (i.e. do not cover people who make a bit over the cut off). We can do better.

Sorry I missed the homogenous Alberta meeting.

So invest in the US now or wait to see if things drop further? My guess is that you are right.

When I post, I may not convince people to accept my beliefs in entirety, but I hope to at least offer a different interpretation of events. Some of my own posts, I admit, may get heated, but they are done in the spirit of exchanging viewpoints and I am willing to alter my beliefs when I can no longer sustain the logic behind them. You do not represent your views very well BigDookie6. You appear to be incapable of reasonable discussion without using profanity and insults. The title of this thread demonstrates as much. I am not sure why you bother to post here at all as you are not altering anyone's beliefs in any way and likely reinforce people's existing beliefs and values. If you do not refrain from these silly comments that you believe are upsetting people (and they are not), then it is only a matter of time before you are permanently banned from this forum. If you actually believe most of the things you say on this forum, then you are truly a victim of some horrible suffering. There are other places that accept such nonsense, why not go there? Since I do not believe that you are posting honestly, I will no longer respond to your posts. I suspect others have already done the same. -
Gay vs. Animal Marriage?

Province = Alberta. Well, having just paid for a useless Senate election that could very well be meaningless to a political body that is really just a place of political patronage, I would like the Senate to be abolished. I have never understood why the right has been opposed to this idea when they constantly say that government should be smaller. What better way than to eliminate an entire (useless) layer? I am in favour of paying taxes for services that I receive (i.e. health care), but I see no value in a political body that does little, or if reformed, will simply duplicate services already received or possibly stall decisions already made by the elected government. Less than half of Alberta voted in this last prov. election so I do not accept the notion that people are in need of better or more representation when they do not even bother to vote. This is pure waste and if reformed will probably be even more wasteful by delaying decisions and fostering more useless discussion.

Fox News Channel ban lifted by state-censor

Have you ever thought about reading a journal article from a library? There is something interesting about reading a peer reviewed paper that has received anonymous reviews (right and left) and has taken months or years to complete as opposed to the scripted, sensationalist one-liners on the so-called news. -
Well put, we always have to be careful about prejudice regardless of the political stripe of any individual. Day deserves no less. Having said that, however, I have noticed that there is a structure to articulating hate. Canadians will not tolerate overt expressions of hatred, so intelligent people will use coded or ambiguous language to float an idea and see how it is received. If received poorly, then say that others including the media treated and quoted you unfairly. If well received, then connect it to a larger political effort. I am always suspicious when intelligent politicians are unable to be clearly understood. Gotta love the nature of the fascination about the man. Few people are interested in the political, social and economic effects of his death, how he came to be leader or what lessons can be learned about his leadership. Rather, it is about his sex life; how it fits. Extremely pathetic if you ask me. This is why I think most media is Jerry Springer cloned crap. But go ahead and celebrate the Fox "victory" and take comfort in the fact that you are being "educated" with important news. Whatta joke.

I think that if you believe that a politician is a MAN, then you are confirming a different form of dictatorship. Alliance leader lost...boo hoo.

Gay vs. Animal Marriage?

So, if all of the gays, lesbians and bisexual left the US (keeping in mind how stupid this idea is because they are just as American as anyone else), then there would be no more so-called deviant sexual behaviour? -
She has really made me feel guilty because I am often too lazy to make Kraft Dinner. If she can make fondu with a ballot then...
