  1. Prove it. Put up the numbers.

A total of 171 MMA matches involving 220 different fighters occurred during the study period. There were a total of 96 injuries to 78 fighters. Of the 171 matches fought, 69 (40.3%) ended with at least one injured fighter. The overall injury rate was 28.6 injuries per 100 fight participations or 12.5 injuries per 100 competitor rounds

UFC 139 medical suspensions and injuries: 'Hendo' and 'Shogun' each get 180-day fight freezes

UFC 139, November 19th: 12 fights on the card, 24 fighters - 12 medically suspended due to injury. Uh, that's 50% injured.

Now, seriously, do you think the NHL has a 50% injury rate?

That is in 12 games between two teams of 20 players each for 480 players, do you believe there were 240 players injured?

    Gimme a break.

  2. Exactly, the Tories just need to play a conservative game (pun intended) starting next year with no new extremely ideological legislation/laws/manifestos/dogma and get a few bounces their way (Global economic recovery) and I don’t foresee a problem with the next election………..

Well, I can't disagree with that strategy. But will it happen. A two goal lead in hockey is comfortable enough for the team to start to cheat and play sloppy and the cons only have a two goal lead. Then again, the libs are playing the trap in the neutral zone... :D

  3. Hey for the record, when Mr Laytons massage came to light, if you went back and checked the thread, I thought it was a disgusting smear, and even cautioned a few of the idiots here on the ins and outs of libel and slander……Id have never voted for Mr Laytons party and disagreed on his policies, and aside from his stance and usage of the troops on Afghanistan, I respected (Not worshipped) the man…….

I meant that in the lightest sense possible, not directed to you or anything. It could be a massage, dancers, cocaine hooker parties, etc. Fact is, politicians seem to get in their fair share as a group, not as an ideology.

  4. Someone drove Goldring home, [Edmonton police spokesman Chad ] Orydzuk said, since the charge brings an immediate 24-hour licence suspension... link

Very interesting. The story I read in the Edmonton Sun referenced in my post here has a quote from the story saying that he wasn't given a 24 hr suspension. Alas, the story now appears to have had edits. Mind you, it was from yesterday.

  5. The right direction? I suppose, I imagine the folks at the stern of the Titanic probably thought the same thing when the bow went down.

Well I think when you look around and sea full of iceburgs and sinking ships, one believes in the right direction if one's ship is still afloat. In other words, it could be a heckava lot worse.

  6. I was only able to get 84,600 results, maybe I should have invested several more seconds to understanding a fundamental issue in the land claims process in Canada.

Drop back when you're done reading and up to speed on this issue.

Well, 84,600 results and you still haven't found how the mysterious "extinguishment clause" is causing the Indians to impede land claims settlements? And here I thought you understood the fundamental issue of the land claims process in Canada.

Surrender and Certainty - Settling Comprehensive Land Claims - Parliament of Canada (emphasis is mine)

A long-standing issue associated with comprehensive claims has been the federal policy requirement that Aboriginal groups surrender their Aboriginal rights and title to lands and resources in exchange for defined rights set out in a land claim settlement. The dominant theme underlying federal policy in this matter, described in national interest terms, concerns the need to achieve “certainty” with respect to land and resource rights and interests. In 1995, reports of both the federal fact finder mandated to explore alternative models and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples(43) suggested that certainty as to land-related rights might be achieved without this “extinguishment.” United Nations bodies have urged Canada to abandon the practice.
  7. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/federal-liberals-gain-on-ndp-conservatives-poll-finds/article2251570/

The Nanos Research Poll, conducted for The Globe and Mail and CTV, shows the Liberals with 28.1 per cent, up from 23.4 per cent last month.

The Tories, meanwhile, edged down to 35.6 per cent from 37.7 per cent in last month’s poll, and the NDP dropped to 27.3 per cent from 30 per cent.

    So which is more accurate?

That is neither here nor there because the article was misquoted. It doesn't say that Canadians are moving to the right, it says that Canada is going in the right direction.

  8. Yes there absolutely is evidence he was impared! He refused to provide a breath sample that would have clearly indicated if he was NOT drinking!Let me remind you that being convicted of refusing to blow is a criminal offence in Canada!

If there was evidence he was impaired, why wasn't his car license suspended for 24 hours? I haven't read anything where he was convicted of DUI. Just that he refused to blow.

Why did he refuse?Because he felt it was unconstitutional or some other symbolic principal reason?Did he not realize the consequences of not blowing?

If he wants to challenge a law by refusing to participate in it, that is his right. You should be thankful for that.

This guy showed poor judgment!Plain and simple. And he was a sitting member of the conservative caucus when this happened. This is a fact!

If it turns out he refused to blow because he wished to challenge the grounds upon which the request was made then he has my support.

And somehow you believe the conservatives can continuely act with complete disregard of our laws and proper conduct and walk away squeeky clean!I think not buddy!

There is no plurality here, this is a single person. Not like the Prime Minister or something.

In fact I believe you are dead wrong!

You are free to believe as you wish.

    Thank God nobody was injured!

    Thank God he wasn't DUI.

Oh and by the way this guy is getting special treatment,if this happened to you or I we would spend the night in jail!

    Maybe, maybe not.

  9. it's your model out east, how's that working?

It working out great, with the largest manufacturing output and wealthiest economy in Canada, and Quebec second, there are no worries.

The people getting rich have businesses producing commodities and servicing commodity producers. Lots of opportunity out west.

But more opportunity in Ontario, where most people flock too. Plus, our weather is better.

Is it a problem if someone gets rich? Why do you easterners hate it when someone makes the big time?

I don't get this "why do you easterners hate it when" BS. By and large, easterners loveit when people from all over Canada make it big time. Not only does it increase the wealth of the country, put more money into public coffers, but it gives something for the traders on Bay street to acquire when they get bored.

  10. Well UFC is just a popular way to combine different martial arts. It hasn't shaken it's no-holds-bar blood sport image from the early 90's I guess but it's a different sport. There are rules, some fans would consider them restrictive rules.

Boxing has been a popular sport for a long time now. I'm sure had a politician found a way to get Mohamed Ali to come into school and promote good things like leadership, fitness, understanding etc. I don't think there'd be a huge outcry.

Have you seen Ali? The whole reason he's a physical mess is because he's taken too many punches in the face.

It's common for Pro Football players not to make it past the age of 60 because of all the head injuries they take. Many hockey players have died recently and head injuries have been to blame.

Just because MMA is a combat sport doesn't mean the participants can't be role models. I'd imagine many children would benefit from looking up to a guy like GSP.

I am still waiting for you to come up with the proof that the NHL, CFL, CBA or any other sporting body has "community programs" to help build character in Toronto school children.

Did you come up with anything yet? Nah, of course you didn't.

Maybe you could see if the WWF has something in the works?

But that is beside the point. Hockey is not the same type of sport as UFC and linking them in this way, after the Premier just made anti-bullying a priority is disengenuous on your part.

  11. Careless driving is not a criminal offence.I believe there are two seperate dangerous driving charges where one carries a criminal offence but not a careless charge.

Aswell Jaffers trial was in Orangeville On. so his offence occured somewhere in Caledon or Dufferin region far apart from his riding in Alberta.Aswell there has bein a recent case of an alleged impared driving trafic accident resulting in the deaths of several highschool students.Do you sincerely believe the voters in Canada have all somehow magicly forgotten about those tragic deaths at the hands of an alleged impared driver?

How many innocent high school students die as a result of Layton trip to a massage parlour?I'm guessing 0!

I am not convinced that the conservatives have a bottomless bag of tricks or get out of jail free cards and eventualy all these chikens are going to come back to haunt them.

Ask Harris what the voters thought about Walkerton

    WWWTT

My msitake. I was unaware that Peter Goldring had killed someone. Wait. He didn't. Was there any indication that he was drunk driving?

So it is back to how this might hurt the cons and, since they got a majority govt. after the Jaffer and Guergis fiasco, I doubt this will put a dent in their govt.

Maybe he is just pushing the envelope:

Police said Goldring, an MP since 1997, has not been charged with impaired driving, nor was he taken into custody.

According to Orydzuk, refusing the breathalyzer results in an immediate 24-hour license suspension, followed by a 21-day grace period, then a three month license suspension.

“The charge also brings a mandatory court appearance, and if convicted, the person faces a minimum $1,000 fine and up to five years in jail, and a possible further driving prohibition,” said Ordyzuk.

But Goldring was not handed an immediate 24-hour suspension Sunday night, said Orydzuk.

    ...

In 2009, the Toronto-born MP publicly opposed legislation that would require roadside screening for all drivers, regardless of whether they were suspected of being impaired.

“It is safe to say everyone is opposed to drunk driving, but there are civil liberty issues involved,” he said on his website at the time.

  12. Until you consider the number of injuries suffered in hockey versus UFC.

Based on the number of participants and the nature of the sport, the injury rate in UFC is much higher than hockey, likey to the point of no compare.

No one has ended up paralyzed or dead in the UFC for starters.

No, but they have died in MMA and that is with a much better thing to compare it to.

And I don't think anyone is going to be using the schools to promote MMA right after the Premier announced anti-bullying legislation either.

Also, since UFC has only been around since 1993 and hockey has been around for over 150 years, give UFC time.

  13. The Natives-Don't-Pay-Taxes argument is a red herring. Many people don't pay taxes, but we don't take away their services.

It is a huge red-herring and every time I hear it, I hear sheer ignorance.

Those making the argument are usually completely unaware that half of the Aboriginal population live in urban areas. Reserve populations account for about 1/3.

Oh, lookit, I can make a cite:

Aboriginal peoples of Canada: A demographic profile

  14. Wtf kind of argument is this? Because he doesn't collect welfare that he pays taxes for but doesn't qualify for, he shouldn't collect cpp which he has also overpaid for but will qualify for? You lefties have a strange way of viewing the world.

No, I do not get any pensions, GST rebates or any other funds from the govt.

That is the "argument" right there. One could say that they receive no money from the govt., but certainly they benefit heavily from government funding of practically everything in Canada including all those socialist lefty things like health care, roads, airports, business subsidies, etc.

You righties have a strange way of understanding English. Did you just get off the plane?

  15. Ah, slight correction there Bryan. Nowhere in the article does it say anyone is "moving to the right." It only says that a certain percentage believe Canada is moving in the right direction. This clearly does not refer to political affiliation. You aren't intentionally misprepresenting the news story are you?

That being said, we are doing OK. I would prefer a minority con government, but the LPC is in no position to do anything and the NDP, well, they're the NDP...
