  1. Hey, I´m for smokers paying their own cancer treatments. They knew the risks when they started smoking so why should we have to pay for their treatment? I know that sounds incredibly heartless, but seriously, how stupid can you be? Everyone knows smoking causes cancer. Simple. However accident victims are different... they couldn´t have done anything to avoid their situation. As for the fatty food eaters, apply restrictions to their treatment too... the first time they get sick and need an operation or something, give it to them. However if someone who is overweight has had medical treatment and then refuses to change their habits, resulting in more medical treatment, then it becomes their fault. Let them take responsibility. Same goes for abortions... everyone knows that if you have unprotected sex, pregnancy is probable. Why should tax payers have to pay for mistakes irresponsible individuals?
  2. It´s sad, isn´t it? How selfish people can be... to deny a child life solely because it would be inconvenient.
  3. I don´t consider myself a liberal, but lets be careful how we say things. I´m sure not every politician from Quebec is corrupt. Anyway, back to the issue of this thread... I really don´t know how anyone can say one politician is ´´good´´ and the other is ´´evil´´. To me, it seems like politics these days has sunk to the level of picking the ´lesser of two evils´. Each and every politician has made mistakes and each has helped Canada in some way. No politician in Canada intends to destroy the country. $50 billion? Aren´t we exaggerating just a tad? As for the military ´crap´... Our military is pitiful. West Edmonton mall has more submarines than the the Canadian navy has... I´m not saying we should go power hungry and try to build a killing machine of an army, however it is important for our men and women in the service to have proper equipment. Even peace keeping missions need proper equipment. We can´t help the world if we don´t have the proper equipment to do so. Now for the ´´opening the door to banning abortion and instilling homophobic attitudes´´... I, personally, am against abortion. I think it is wrong. However, I do not want to get into that debate again... as much as I detest it, abortion is probably here to stay. However, I would like to see some restrictions put on abortions. Thousands of women get abortions every year and the majority of those are as a form of birth control. One of the main arguements for abortion is women who are pregnant because of rape or who´s lives are in danger if they give birth to the baby should have abortion as an option. Fine. Let the government pay for those women´s abortions, however women who´s pregnancy just isn´t ´convenient´shouldn´t have easy access to abortion. There should be restrictions applied... at very least they should have to pay for their own abortions and not the tax payers. And lastly, instilling homophobic attitudes... this country is very divided over the issue of gay marriages and gay rights. I am not homophobic, but I believe marriage is something that should be reserved as a union between a man and a woman... and half the country agrees with me. I hope Harper is elected and I hope he settles this issue once and for all.
  4. I personally am appalled that abortion ever became legal in the first place. Before people start attacking me about the women´s rights issues, I have to say I am female. I don´t think abortion is a women´s rights issue. We should be protecting the rights of the unborn, they are afterall, still children. Too many women today are using abortion as a form of birth control and getting these expensive and horrendous proceedures done on the governments bill. I feel if abortion is to be legal, the government should only pay for ONE abortion in a womans lifetime. I would much rather see abortion be made illegal again... I believe abortion is WRONG. Period. However, if I must live with it in my society I would like to see some serious restrictions applied to it.
  5. Saying stupid things are a fact of life with politicians. Every single politician has his or her foot half way down their throat all the time. Yes, I´m sure Conservatives have said some stupid things in their time, but so have Liberals. I´m sure Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish has stuck her foot in her mouth after this comment: “Damn Americans, I hate those bastards,” she said while surrounded by reporters after a caucus meeting. (The Globe and Mail, June 9) Lets not let our party affiliation become our gang colors. So what if I´m Conservative and you´re Liberal? We have no right to start a yelling match with someone just because they´re from a different party. We´re all Canadian afterall. Let´s be respectful and try to keep this forum clean of immature mud slinging.
  6. I would definately love to see the Christian Heritage Party come to power, however their beliefs are not too popular with the crowd nowadays. However between the two ´´big guys´´ right now-- the Conservatives and the Liberals, the Conservatives are definately the way to go. I still don´t agree with everything the Conservatives stand for but it seems to be the ´lesser of two evils´at this point.
  7. Ha! I´m sorry, I´ve just been reading through the posts in this forum and I can´t help but burst out laughing when I see some of the responses posted here. Page 2 was especially amusing. I just can´t believe how a group of supposedly mature adults can transform a politcal forum into a playground spat. However, maybe that´s the problem with politics these days. Our political leaders exhibit the same immaturity as some members of this forum. Our country is being run by toddlers!
  8. I know trade betwen and Canada and the US is important, but what about aside from trade? For example, there were problems when the US first decided to go to war with Iraq and Canada was dragging its feet about backing the States up in the war. Bush got upset with Canada. Was he justified in being upset? Don`t we have the right to say ``No, this is your war. We don`t want to get involved.`` or should we always be expected to back up the States, no matter what?
  9. BlackDog, with so many people with a wide variety of beliefs, how would the government ever come to a sound decision? Is there not a need for a common unifying source from which to base decisions on? Sure, ´´secular humanist thought´´ may have given us democracy, but it also gave the world Fascism and Communism. Ideas born from secular humanist thought have also cursed the world. It is in many ways a very unreliable source.
  10. The last topic about Church and State unity got me thinking... how should the government measure right from wrong? The Bible has been used by many countries as a basic standard, including our own and the United States. Many argue against using the Bible by saying not every one follows the Bible. If the government shouldn´t measure morality by the Bible, then what should it use as a guide? Since we are a democracy does that mean the majority is always right? (ex. Majority suddenly decides murder isn´t ´´wrong´´ anymore... should the government follow the majority´s wishes? ) What should the government base its morality on?
  11. Interesting quiz... My stats were: Economic Left/Right: -4.25 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.87
  12. Often it seems as though Canada is helpless to make big decisions without the US´s approval. Can we even call ourselves independant anymore? It seems like if the USA catches wind of something Canada wants to do that the USA isn´t too fond of, we are expected to immediately back off. The US threatens to withdraw its support and we´re crippled! Have we become the 51st state?
  13. Do you really believe people were more moral in the past? Or that moral questions were easier in the past? No, I do not believe people we necessarily ´´moral´´ in the past, however the guidelines were clearer (or at least they seemed to be) Many things that were considered ´´wrong´´ even just 50 years ago have now entered a grey area (i.e. gay marriage rights) When will the ´´greying effect´´ end? Will we ever have a strict policy of right and wrong or will we continue to smudge that line even further as certain groups become more vocal? Will whats ´´right´´ be determined by what the loudest crowd says? Its a frustrating topic.
  14. Our country was founded on Christian beliefs. Why should politicians not be allowed to base decisions on Biblical morality? I believe the problem with many countries today, including our own, is that we have strayed from strict moral beliefs. There is no longer a clear line seperating ´´right´´ from ´´wrong´´. The line has been continually glazed over leaving it as one big grey area. I believe a country ruled by the guidelines set down by the Bible would be much better off. At least then we would have a strict scale by which we could measure decisions made. We were founded on these beliefs and it worked well at getting our country started, why wouldn´t it work now?
