A Conversation About Race
Malaclypse the Younger replied to lictor616's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Probably because the news doesn't report every single rape, and when it does, it doesn't necessarily report the skin colour of the people involved. How many white men rape white women every year? Does it really make a difference, when the most important factor in the issue of rape is sexual assault, and not skin colour? -
You mean a transfer of debt. Not many people have truly become richer as a result of this recession. The United States is sinking itself into bankruptcy when it's paying trillions of dollars in an attempt to stave off the effects of eight years of bad judgment. It really won't be too surprising to see America turn into Zimbabwe within the next decade.

supporting gandhi vs supporting bush

I don't think he called Hitler a "dear friend" because they actually knew each other or had ever even met each other. More likely, it was part of his plea to end the violence. -

He never said that non-violence was the answer to Hitler. In fact, he did say that non-violence was not the answer to a number of problems, and that if an invading force were to attack his country, he would certainly take up arms and fight back. Gandhi knew that non-violence was the answer to the British because he knew that they were not completely heartless, and that not all of the British authorities in India truly wished to continue to subjugate India. Quite the opposite, he knew exactly what Hitler was doing. Just because he made pleas to a violent person to not go to war and to stop the war that he started, does not mean that he did not know that Hitler was bent on continuing his war at any cost. If you beg and plea for a person who is about to kill you to not kill you, does that mean that you don't know they're about to kill you, or does that mean you want to live? -

Stormfront isn't racist, they just hate black people. And Jews. And Arabs. And Asians. And anyone else that's not white, or Christian. -

They were already in harm's way. One British officer had scores of people shot for merely being in the presence of a man who was speaking about non-violence and against British rule. -

In the case of India under British rule, by your comparison, everyone was a child in the middle of the street, whether they chose to be there or not, whether Gandhi did anything or not. -

Guns and clubs don't do anything without people wielding them. He didn't create those conditions. The conditions had already been created by the British. Their rules were that anyone fighting back against their own enslavement be beaten, imprisoned or shot. He was counting on violence from the British, but he didn't send anyone to do anything. He asked people if they wanted to be free, and suggested non-violent non-co-operation as a solution. Everyone could have chosen to stay at home and do nothing. Again, it is not Gandhi's fault that the British chose violence as their reaction to people speaking and standing up for their country. That's not at all the same. Gandhi never suggested that any Indian should kill any British person. -

The ones that committed suicide didn't suffer. -

He didn't cause anyone's death. It was the British that did the killing. -

Sure it did. They didn't suffer abuse at the hands of the Nazis. -

Actually, it seems everyone in this thread but me is horrendously ignorant of what Gandhi did and why. -

That's why Gandhi suggested mass suicide. Rather than suffer at the hands of the Nazis, they would give them their dead bodies and not their obedience. -

It is possible to forgive, you know. The British did finally leave when it became clear that they weren't going to win a fight against three hundred and fifty million Indians. -

Gandhi also said that India will have its problems, which its people will solve in their own way, in their own time. The point of satyagraha was not to be free of slums, the point was to be free of British rule. -

I don't think Gandhi did what he did because he wanted people to see brutality in the evening news. He started his movement because he wanted to free his country from British rule. It's not his fault that the British chose to beat and shoot non-violent, unarmed citizens. They could have just left. Instead, they chose to get violent. -

He didn't send people to be harmed. He asked people to do the right thing for their families, their homes and their country by putting themselves in harm's way, and did no less himself. No one had to follow Gandhi, but they chose to because of the deplorable conditions that the British were forcing Indians to live with. What do launching rockets at people and non-violent protest have to do with each other? -
Why would that get anyone hauled to the Human Rights Comission? It's not a hate crime to ask someone to obey customs in a place of worship. We're not even talking about a minority, in the case of the church, which claims a sect of the largest religion in Canada, or the Prime Minister, who happens to be one of the most priveledged people in the whole country.

What's wrong with the school doing it? It's the same system either way.

Some parents may not have a lot of time in their week to take their kid to doctor for a checkup. Why not make it easier for them?

Both should be banned. One produces a lot of garbage and an unhealthy body. The other produces a lot of garbage and puts water distribution in corporate hands. Merely being fat doesn't necessarily indicate that someone is just lazy and eats too much, or has a poor diet. Some people are genetically predisposed to a slow metabolism. Adversely, some skinny people simply cannot get fat because their metabalism works too well. What would be more realistic is if doctors made semi-annual rounds to schools to do some basic checkups, with the permission of parents, and then make recommendations based on any findings.
