  1. ^^^^^^^^^^^

Only watches Albainian Art films...sans the subtitles.

Here's a scene from "The Beast", which we discussed earlier, if you've never had the pleasure.

Here are also some great battle scenes from both "Cross of Iron" and "Stalingrad". Two German war movies on the Russian Front...mentioned a few pages back. Both get top marks from me for historical accuracy...uniforms...tanks & equipment...as well as numerous other details.

Another 'sleeper' that was actually quite a lot of fun was Clint Eastwood's classic "Heartbreak Ridge". Gotta love 'Gunny' Highway.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

My name's Gunnery Sergeant Highway and I've drunk more beer and banged more quiff and pissed more blood and stomped more ass that all of you numbnuts put together.

    ---

Just think what the Albanians could do if they had Hollywood's money, LOL. But then De Sica was Italian. Google is a good place to learn about European countries. YOu should try it.

And thanks for the illegal copyright violation links.

  2. It is a great example of countries getting along, and I think our countries have a special relationship that goes beyond "getting along" -- even if your alcohol isn't strong enough for us wimpy American beer drinking folk. ;) It's big of you to forgive us Bush-Cheney and Palin, though. I don't even forgive us for that. And since I'm not a NY Yankees fan, and they seem to be all about forced patriotism, I don't forgive us them, either. :P

I'm beginning to think Canadians are a more forgiving lot than Americans, but then there's that comment about keeping our hands off your ice ..............

Amazing. You people cannot even deal with your own problems without some Hollywood jackass emoting about how we should all give to make up for your screw-ups.

A real eye-opener for me was when Frank Stronach went down there and started to build welfare housing.

Don't you people have any pride?

Yanqui Right wing = pathetic losers that cannot take care of their own.

How sad that our people are still getting killed to support your stupid foreign policy.

    Yanqui losers.

  3. A hockey mom is more fierce than a pit bull. So, those of you who pay attention to hockey parent violence...

Has she assaulted a parent from the other team? A referee? A coach? Has she (Madam the mayor) ever driven her kids to a hockey game?

How many games has she really been there for? Come on now...

A hockey mom. And a mayor.

Yeah right. So, Sarah, what exactly does off-side mean?

    LOL. Another Yankee poser.

  4. I may be missing a whole layer of political knowledge here, but please help me understand why do we have a Governor General who also appears to be "Commander-in-Chief of Canada"?

My understanding was Canada is no longer a colony and even less - a Monarchy.

Why do we spend tax money on maintaining political structure dedicated to a foreign country's Monarch?

And why is the Monarch's image on our money?

Now I'm no history expert but I'm pretty sure USA (a former British colony) has none of that...

Should Canada step above its colonial past and promote its own values as a multinational country?

I hope I'm not offending anybody's feelings but some things just strike me as illogical...

I'm with you here. Why indeed? It's dumb. Just like our senate - elected or not. We have a really dumb system.

  5. Apologies if anyone has mentioned this. Maybe I missed it. Another thing that disappoints me about the Tories is their abrupt cancellation of the income trust regime. This tax regime built out the western oil and gas industry before the big commodity boom came along. Because of income trusts (Oil Sands Income Trust, anybody?) we were ready when the boom came along.

Harper's (and Flaherty's) mis-step on this issue hurt many many small investors - especially retirees, whom the Harper government has been trying very hard to suck up to ever since. It really angered a lot of very serious business people, not only in the west, but also on Bay Street.

What made it even more egregious is the fact that, when he was running for PM, Harper told us all that he would not touch income trusts.

Would you buy a used investment from this guy?

  6. I think it's a great museum, but I would like to see less focus on hardware and more on campaigns, losses, heroism, etc.. Canadians need to know more about exactly what our military has done. Look at our contributions in the North Atlantic in WWII. The Yanks were sitting at home waiting for an engraved bloody invitation while their industrialists were making a killing supplying for the Brits and our boys were getting massacred taking their crap across the Atlantic. Canadian Troops liberated Holland! Read about that! One of the big films this year at the Tranna Film Festival is Paul Gross' 'Paschendale'.

Canadians need to know what our military has done so we won't get sucked in by guys like Harper who wanted to invade Iraq.

  7. Strong is a guy who got very rich on government poobah jobs by coming up with outside of the box ideas. When he was at Ontario Hydro, he talked his way into a major purchase of Brazilian Rainforest as a carbon offset. Ahead of his time maybe, but he did nothing about the fact that their Nuclear Division was running the place to rack and ruin.

Strong is the quintessential academic. He is very impractical, but he has great contacts in the international community thanks to Pearson and Trudeau. You can Google him to see what they did for his career. He has homes on every continent.

Strong is basically useless other than his ability to put UN leaders in touch with certain aspects of the world community.

Maurice Strong is essentially a dilitant. The UN equivalent of Paris Hilton.

  8. Well...here it is. What part is anti American

"Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....

I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....

and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,

although I'm certain they're really really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a president.

I speak English and French, not American.

And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.

I believe in peace keeping, not policing,

    diversity, not assimilation,

and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.

A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,

and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!

Canada is the second largest landmass!

    The first nation of hockey!

and the best part of North America

    My name is Joe!!

    And I am Canadian!!!

Ha ha. So you're being ironic, right?

  9. Sure did, I've mentioned her before, The Queen Bitch Of The Universe. I'd say as a person she was the worst woman I've ever met, but she was smokin hot and her whole focus in life was sex.

Now, trivia. Does any one know which movie the line "queen bitch of the universe" is from?

Just think how much better you would have ben able to deal with her if you'd had a little education in advance.

I've had one of those. Well actually two. They would have eaten me alive if I didn't have something to bring to the table.

  10. Not only is there no reporting duty, they don't show up on the DOT statistics. Where they do show up is in the wrecking yards - it's an excellent way to get a good lightly used drive train for a custom hotrod with modern emissions controls for peanuts. In terms of getting hit by a cop car, I had a narrow escape a few years ago. I avoided the accident that if it happened would have killed the officer. Then he tried to charge me with a whole slew of infractions after I saved his life. Luckily, there were other officers present that he couldn't bring onside since the street racing legislation didn't exist yet, nor the on site training. If it had, I'd have lost my car for saving the twit's life.

Matthew Power's death as a result of a street racing incident takes this entire class of accident to the federal level where it is dealt with as a Criminal Code offence. That is as it should be in terms of dealing with the offender. The province has no say in the matter. Bear in mind also that despite the hype about the speed, the accident could have still happened at a much lower speed. There were all sorts of aspects of this case that made it a criminal offence. Ontario's street racing law was no deterrent to the offenders and in that respect has essentially failed. You don't stop a social problem with a traffic law anymore than you treat a broken left leg by putting a cast on the right arm. There are lots of reasons why street races occur but so far I haven't seen a single action taken by the Ontario government to use anything like a constructive win/win solution to solve the problem.

The bottom line remains - the government wants the money.

How do you suppose the OPP aircraft was paid for? In one weekend? Can you see the government walking away from a cash cow like that?

Certainly no one in the government is using that language but when you read between the lines, that's part of what is driving the excessive and illegal legislation.

Strict legislation that delivers a harsh sentence without solving the problem is junk legislation. The street racing legislation was a knee jerk reaction to public opinion and understandably so. However, knee jerk reactions are always vulnerable to being as bad or worse than the offence they were meant to stop.

The street racing legislation is so full of mistakes it's unbelievable. That's why so many people are being pled down or being found innocent. Judges are charged with upholding the law. But if the law is flawed, they have no choice but to find the person guilty of a lesser more applicable charge or being tossed altogether.

Judges are people too. They don't want to set abusers of any sort free. But if you want convictions, you have to write the laws in such a way that the convictions are inevitable within the framework of Canadian Law. The street racing law is so poorly written it's a wonder anyone is convicted. It's so bad it looks like it was written by a first year law student without a driver's license. How tight can you imagine a law like that could be?

So before anyone starts asking for stiffer sentences, you might take a look at the legislation yourself and be prepared to be disgusted at the lousy effort your tax dollars funded.

Then you need to look at the Ministry of Transport's charts for accident statistics. When you're done, your head will be spinning. That's because so much of it exists in a confusing format with a lot of the information being totally irrelevant to the legal system that is trying to make sense out of it. A big part of the problem is that the people who are assembling the statistics have no idea what the people who need the information want. That apparently is because no one has ever told them exactly what information is valuable and what isn't.

There are no historic numbers specifically for street racing of any sort in any of the charts. The OPP must have researched their files for the numbers they gave the public. However, what they gave the public says that over the last eight years varies from 34 deaths to 39 deaths and everything in between. But just a few weeks ago, Fantino said that 82 lives had been saved as a result of the street racing legislation. Huh? Up until 2006, only approximately four death a year could be attributed to street racing. What happened?

Our rights were denied on the strength of those charts that tell you that empty cars are responsible for twice as much carnage on our roads as street racing. Anyone want to write up a law harsh enough to stop all those evil empty cars from killing people?

    Great post! Thanks!

  11. I'm starting this thread so everybody can have a chance to give the raspberry to advertising campaigns.

My favourite cynicism in advertising candiate is the Joe Rant (oops Joe Canadian) advertising campaign run by Molsons a few years back. It was basically an anti-American rant. "We have a beaver and not and eagle.. we have a prime minister and not a president.... AND I AM CANADIAN!"

Molsons spent major bucks to send this guy and his flannel shirt all over the country delivering his rant at county fairs, jazz festivals, speedways....

At the same time, Molsons was selling the Montreal Canadiens to an American businessman from Washington DC.

Has to be a low point in Canadian advertising.

Really. What would hapen if Steinbrunner sold the Yankees to Japanese interests?

I challenge anybody to come up with anything lower than this.

  12. Actually if you'd lived in England back in the sixties you'd see just how pertinent that movie was. It wasn't just some imaginary piece, it was an attempt to forecast society. The whole gang thing actually isn't the thrust of the movie, its the commentary on society and the evolution (or devolution) of political systems that is the focus of the movie. I think you missed the whole point of it from what you're saying, perhaps watch it again with your focus more on those area's.

The whole gang thing in Clockwork Orange wasn't that different from reality at the time. Sure they used scooters, by mocking this facet you are just showing that you don't know the reality of life in Europe at that time, a time when most people still did not own vehicles. For the youth of that time a scooter was equivalent to what a sub compact car would be today. Tell me, does it hurt less to be placed in intensive care by a gang on scooters? How bout those Skin Heads? Just a lovely bunch of young men.

Keep in mind, the violence perpetrated by these amongst others was not just something that happened now and then, say during a strike for instance. It was an everyday fact of life, something you lived with each time you stepped outside the door.

As for the educational value of porn. Well perhaps it holds educational value for you but it has pretty much none for me.

I've already acknowledged your historical perspective for A Clockwork Orange, but if you never needed any sex education, then you either have had (a partner/partners) who didn't give a damn or at least one who was one hell of a good lay.

  13. I agree this is a good law, but the problem comes with enforcement, particularly when enforcement is controlled by Julian Fantino, Ontario Provincial Police top dawg.

The CBC did a piece describing how a motorocyclist who grew impatient with the humungous GTA traffic jams tried driving between lanes of traffic.

The OPP charged him with stunt driving (same as street racing), impounded his motorocycle, and gave him a big fat ticket. He had to hire a lawyer, pay over a thousand to get his bike back, and then had to sell the bike to pay the fines and lawyer fees.

This is an abuse of power. If you think that what this guy did is wrong, what is the scale of wrong? Is it chased by a flock of patrol cars wrong? Is it illegal right turn wrong?

I'm all for stopping street racing, but I think that the legislation and Fantino need a little fine-tuning.

  14. The average Canadian is doing better than they've ever done before according to MacLeans and other sources that I've seen recently. I'm not saying it has anything to do with Stephen Harper though.

Well now the full picture is revealed. Jim Flaherty, a guy whom Ontarians have grown to know and trust almost as far as they can throw him, has shown that, yes folks, there was a deficit in the first two months of the quarter (hold on, ladies and germs, who reports on a two month basis?) but, in the third month of the quarter, we ripped a 1.5 billion surplus!

Holey hole in a doughnut, Baitman. Does this mean that we now have a syncopated reporting schedule? First we get a report for the first 2 months, then we get a report for the last month. Hang on folks. This just in. In the last 10 minutes of the quarter.... Or does it mean that we are heading for an election?

"Steven Haper is a stand up guy" (quote from a recent Conservative Party TV ad).

  15. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories

The low fare business plan often ends up with a collapse. We have seen this type of cyclical decline in the air business a few times now. Sucks for the people who bought tickets and had their travel plans thwarted.

Yeah. A lousy outcome. Those who bought their tickets through travel agents, or with credit cards that offer automatic trip insurance will be OK. Everyone else is S.O.L.
