Harper Announces Six Arctic Patrol Boats
Proud Canuck replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"The federal government will fund the construction of six to eight new Arctic patrol ships to help reassert Canada's sovereignty over the North, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday.Harper also said the government will construct a deepwater port somewhere in the Far North, with the location to be announced soon. The port will be used as an operation base for the new patrol vessels. Sounds like you're gonna get that port you wanted." 1) The six patrol vessels are coastal patrol boats, not ice-breakers. 2) The port will help the economy of the arctic and the rest of Canada. I wonder how Curious George in Washington feels about this? -
Are you ready for the "Big One!"

I think that we all feel the same way. If someone threatens my family, I would have no problem removing the threat. The only question I have is how do we separate the Muslims who want to kill us from those who just go about their lives here in Canada? -
The fine should have been $4,000 a month for the rest of his life!

Time for someone to be educated! 1 - The Globe doesn't cover American Football because they choose to give in depth coverage of the CFL and the NHL. They are also Canada's 'National Newspaper' and there are no Canadian team in the NFL. The other papers are regional papers except for the National Post which has less than half of the circulation of the Globe and Mail. There are also people in Toronto and Hamilton who don't want the NFL in Canada. The NFL has stated that they will not be expanding to Canada at this time due to lack of fan support. 2 - Most other Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Hamilton,Winnipeg and Montreal strongly support their CFL teams. Many fans fear that if the NFL comes into Canada, the CFL will not be able to compete. There is no interest in the NFL except in Toronto where the Argos are losing money because they play in the Skydome. They should be playing at Varsity Stadium which is much smaller but has the proper atmosphere for football in Canada. 3 - NFL footbal is boring. I mean 4 downs to move the ball? In Canada we only use three downs which means more passes and more excitement. Who wants to see the ball being run on almost every play? We also have a larger field to play on. 4 - Did you know that the Baltimore Stallions are the only non-Canadian team to win the Grey Cup? 5 - The Grey Cup game is always more exciting than the series of blowouts called the "Super Bowl"?

Trudeau was right! We are not Americans because we believe that every province in Canada has the right to follow a different political path from their neighbour which means that the provinces often wind up negotiating to keep Canada together while keeping their independence from Ottawa. Americans do not seem to want that kind independence. Their independance was founded on the belief that the rights of the individual take priority over the rights of the state. We Canadians do not believe in individual rights to the same extent as Americans and this is how Canadians like it. Look at the gun issue for example. Americans have the constitutional right to bear arms. In Canada, we do not want or need such a "right". We would rather have safe streets and clean drinking water. There is also the American myth of the 'melting pot' vs the Canadian myth of the 'cultural mosaic'. The American myth goes like this: A person emigrates to the United States and becomes an American by adopting the culture and values of his neighbours. This is often at the expense of his original culture and values. The Canadian myth has the same immigrant coming to Canada to contribute his culture but keep his values. The American melting is starting to show cracks. There are small but growing independence moverments in Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii. Many Amercians of hispanic descent are calling Calixians, Texicans, or simply Mexican - American or Hispanics. The politicians in Washington are having a hard time understanding Americans who don't to be American anymore. The cultural mosaic works because even Quebec Separtists want to remain a part of Canada, they just don't want to keep the status quo. The politicians in Ottawa understand this and keep negotiating with Quebec. Do not worry, Quebec will never leave Canada. That is why Canada will last as country for many years to come.

I feel if there are attacks, then Canada will give in to the terrorists. After all, that's what we do in Canada. (native protests, Islamists, etc).

How alike are Canadians and Americans
Proud Canuck replied to leonardcohen's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Who said it would have to be Britain and France or "countries of that ilk"? Our relations with many first and third world countries is much better than the Americans. A case in point is China and Russia. Canada has cooperated with several the Chinese on several high tech and large construction projects, such as the Three Gorges Dam. Our government is currently considering purchasing three heavy lift military transport air craft such as the Antonov An 225. Take a look around the world and you will see anti Americanism rising in countries such as Japan, Russia, Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Do you really think that the US would risk attacking a country whose relationship with the entire world is better than theirs? -

David Wilkins thinks Arar is still a threat

They would have more power if they had the land they needed to develop the wind turbine farms. I found an interesting document from Wind Energy Niagra. Got to http://www.regional.niagara.on.ca/governme...anels_4_5_6.pdf

You do not need wind! They are using an under sea power generator that uses the ocean current to generate electricity. There is also one that uses the tides to generate electricity. It turns with the tide to provide a constant flow of electricity.

"Wilkins is a diplomat. He gets a free pass on all of this, and no he is not putting money over rights of our citizens. What crime could we attach to put him on a wtach list?" How about kidnapping? How about unlawful confinement? How about malicous prosecution? Those are just three that I could think of. He be a diplomat but you can be sure that he would be removed quietly if Canada and Arar complained loud enough and long enough. -
A genuine Canuck’s view
Proud Canuck replied to ft.niagara's topic in Canada / United States Relations
According to the information I have read. It was not a mistake to build it! It was such a good aircraft that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, an Airforce General by the name of Curtis LeMay suggested to President Eisenhower that the US government buy the aircraft. The decision not to buy came after companies such as McDonell/Douglas and Northrop Aviation, who were the major suppliers of fighter aircraft to the US Airforce, put pressure on the US Congress. Avro Aircraft tried to counter this by offering to build a US version in the United States!. They also offered to use weapons systems purchsed from US manufactures. -
Secret CIA chemical labs

They were experiments done on psychiatric patients from the 1940's to the late 1960's. These experiments involved giving patients psycotropic (mind altering) such as LSD. They were also given low doses of radiation. I am not sure why these experiments were done. -
So why do the Americans want to increase trade with Venezuela? Could be because of all that lovely Venezuelan oil? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/fn/4413088.html Could be that the Americans have finally woken up to the fact that not every government in the world will agree with them? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/world/4414733.html

Fair enough. Let's just say that there are a few people who think that will be a simple business decision. Yes, anything is possible, including a civil war and the possibly violent break up of Quebec. Quebec separation will be anything but a "business decision". If Quebec separates, then the Cree Indians and Inuit can separate and join Canada or start their own countries. Do you think Quebec will let them and their resource rich lands go without a fight? Also areas of Quebec such as the Gatineau and the Gaspe have large populations that work in Ontario and the States. They just might decide to leave Quebec in favour of Ontario, Vermont or new York State.
-
The four aircraft that took off were not armed. The pilots did ask the military air traffic controllers " do you want us to ram the aircraft." They were told "yes". By the time they reached New York city from their base in Ohio, the second aircraft had already struck the twin towers. The other aircraft that were slated to defend the eastern sea board of the United States were involved in joint exercises with the Canadian Military in the Caribbean and would not have been able to get to New York, Washington or Pennsylvania in time.

Redistribution gives more seats to Ontario too. Liberals weren't a coast to coast party back when Trudeau was around. Redistribution of seats in Ontario could cause more political fragmentation between Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. In the 1980s there was an attempt to separate the north from the south. There has always been a certain amount of political friction between the two. The Liberals have always relied on their Quebec power base (and certain ridings in Ontario) to keep them in power. The Conservates appear to have Alberta, Parts of Ontario, New Brunswick and parts of Quebec to build a power base.
-
Actually, I was thinking more in the terms of violence of First Nations, attacks on English if they are resistant to Quebec making a break from Canada and assorted, escalating conflicts. You think separation will be a peaceful and uneventful thing? Has it ever been that way anywhere else in the world? There is also the possibility of attacks on francophones living outside of Quebec.

Would Americans care if Quebec separated from Canada? Should Americans care if Quebec separated from Canada?

Iranian Ambassador Acknowledges Holocaust
Proud Canuck replied to ft.niagara's topic in The Rest of the World
"The conference, scheduled for Sunday and Monday, was organized by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called the systematic killing of some 6 million Jews a "myth" and "exaggerated." Some 67 foreign researchers from 30 countries are scheduled to attend the two-day meeting." You can replace the words 'foreign researchers' with 'holocaust deniers'. Wasn't there a Canadian University professor who got raked over the coals for attending this conference? Does anyone know his name?
