NDP proposes Federal Minimum Wage - $10.00
madmax replied to ClearWest's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sir John A MacDonald, create the National Policy tariffs and all, regardless of Liberal Opposition. The world is not going to be selling smokes in a Macs Milk in White Horse. The World is not going to be making hamburgers up the road at McDonalds. But there is lots of people in the world whom will work for food and create for an export commodity on behalf of Nike or Walmart. You assume that the market operates on level playing fields.. they don't And China doesn't Including the rate of exchange on their money. Why are you focusing on Unskilled Labour? Or the conclusion of a CEO So are we to work for .40 cents per hour? Are Engineers and Supervisers in Canada prepared to work for .80cents per hour? Maybe we didn't have to compete with a global economy 100 years ago, but clearly the wages of China today are quite comfortable with that time period -

Raising the minimum wage isn't designed to make anyone rich or wealthy. Yes, they will still be poor. Inflation will also be around. Inflation will occur regardless of whether the minimum wage remains stagnate. -

Your comments intrigued me to look around a bit at some of the larger minimum wage employers. -

If the minimum wage was removed wages would fall and people still would not be able buy food and pay the rent. Your "belief" suggests that increasing the minimum wage would force business to pay employees more than they are worth. You do know that this has been happening since 1918? -

Cops are people. There is a segment of the population which does bad things. The police force is not immune from these people either. Therefore you can have bad cops. I do not know what this has to do with Federal Politics? -

The Question in the poll to which I responded was "more" regulation. Not whether or not it was regulation. We already have a minimum wage. It had been around for many many many decades, it is legislated and regulated. The world has not ended. Canada has not been ruined by it. Do I think it is the only alternative? Read the 10 dollar minimum wage thread in the Provincial Thread. -
The right wouldn't have any problem arming Arab dictators with Biological and Chemical weapons either. Governments have handed money over to African dictators for decades. It's called "exploitation" or "interests" take your pick. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Governments are bought and Dictators go sour. In the midst of this are the people not benefiting from these policies and also getting ripped off by Dictators on both ends of the spectrum.

I cannot discern if this is new money or not. Jean Poutine directed me towards some aid figures a few months back regarding aid committments towards Afghanistan over ten years. If it is another boost in aid on top of previous announcements then that is positive for Afghanistan. EDIT: It does appear like it is new money.

You mean like those WMD and drones of death in Iraq that almost 3200 young Americans have died for so far? Interesting that you would take the quote so out of context. Baylee, I will take a little bit of time to answer you. This thread is on Afghanistan, but I will digress with regards to Iraq, and HUMAN INTELLIGENCE. Known as Humit for short. Human Intelligence for the US in Iraq was nearly non existent. Insiders weren't really insiders, and there were liars that were trying to make a buck but were discredited. Yet the US administration choose to use whatever garbage they needed to promote a war. If you tell a lie long enough people will begin to believe it, and the Bush administration told whopper after whopper. However, back to Afghanistan. Without good information on the ground, progress will be difficult to achieve. The ISI has a significant human intelligence network. They can find people of interest if/when necessary. The US/Can has no such capabilities in any large scale to perform such needed and required actions.

Every country committing troops has a timetable of sorts for every action. Of course Canada needs a timetable. This sounded ludicrous 6 months ago. Now everyone is suggesting just that. There is nothing wrong with having a plan of action. Setting Goals. The mission in the south was expanded and extended to 2009. While I completely disagree with the mission and its extension. I think it is not physical possible for some 2,200 soldiers to run around, kill the enemy, and be all things to the Afghans: Reconstructionists, Humanitarian providers, Security providers, and counter insurgents. It is alot to ask of our Forces, while at the same time, we have not been successful in applying significant pressure on NATO to partake in these same roles weve taken on. We also can provide no clear solution to the recruitment and sanctuary for the Taliban and their allies, in Pakistan. These are problems for the Afgan Government, and their military. Afghanistan has had no trouble finding recruits to fight the Soviets. Recruits to fight the Northern Alliance. So why are they having such a difficult time competing for recruits vs the Taliban? We should not provide the above military duties/missions for an unlimited lenght of time.

Not really. Sounds mushy, whiney and indecisive. But the interesting thing about the turnabout with the Liberals is they are echoing the NDP, only the date is different. Especially since the NDP date is upon us:-). The CPC aren't any different only talking about the same with a date later then the Liberals. This is from Laytons speech back in August 2006. At least with the NDP and CPC I can see the difference with regards to the mission itself. Laytons comparison between Liberals and CPC. And as for the mission, here are some excerpts. What is interesting about this. Is that O Conner asked these questions first. Two different perspectives on a difficult subject with the Liberals flip flopping around and grasping for an Identity.

I personally am intrigued by Geoffreys proposals. That said, a company I am involved with made over $65million dollars, and paid $35000. Of course we bugged the CFO because it was so high this year.

NDP proposes Federal Minimum Wage - $10.00
madmax replied to ClearWest's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Most of my comments on the $10 wage are in the Provincial Forum where the NDP have campaigned on the issue. Since this thread isn't about a tax structure, and since no Province has tried to go it on their own but has relied on a minimum wage format, then I will leave my thoughts to the systems current status quo. If we are going to have minimum wages, then these wages are to provide a living wage for working people. This isn't based upon market forces. Therefore it is based upon legislation. The question in this forum is flawed and misleading. Not surprising for this website. I don't believe their is more "regulation" just more money for business to pay low income earners. I don't believe a "minimum" wage is the be all and end all. But I don't see legislaton offering up anything different. Just a bunch of talk here. So, should it go up. Damn Straight. -
What is logical to you doesn't make it so. Not everyone 2nd choice is Liberal. A CPC logical 2nd choice is not always Liberal An NDPs Logical 2nd choice is not always Liberal or Green. That is primitive Buzz Hargrove thinking. Sillyness indeed.

I have no problem with the article or the public inquiry. However, you have an agenda, that is not one that I share. Nor do you wish to engage in a rational debate without resorting to juvenile comments similar in nature to your juvenile nickname. -
I haven't seen anything fiscally Conservative from this government. I have seen them as having moved from fiscally Conservative to fiscally Populist. The adds have worked regardless of their taste.

Is it time for our charter to be re-ratified
madmax replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Nonsense You have that reversed. Individual Rights and Freedoms limit State Control. What a scheme! Everything is against Conservatives. I think you are paranoid. These things were going on long before the charter. The Conservatives have always been players of the system. They just haven't managed to hold the reigns of power the last 13 years. Can't see the need to change a system Conservatives can play. I only want to see the Senate Abolished. A useless institution. But to open up a constitutional can of worms for that , isn't worth the problems that come with it. Governments can run this country with the controls and limitations in place quite effectively. I remember Mulroney getting involved with the Constitution. This is something to stay away from with a ten foot pole. There are better things governments can be doing for us, rather then claim how hard done by they are by the current system. -
